About the Department:

It is the mission of the Office of Student Conduct and the Student Conduct System at George Mason University to turn potential incidents of misconduct into opportunities for the facilitation of education and student development. It is our goal, as students make their way through the adjudication process, they will leave that process as better educated students, better all-around members of the University community, and better global citizens.

About the Position:

The Coordinator of Community Standards, under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Community Standards, is responsible for implementing the vision and mission of the Office of Student Conduct campus-wide with a primary focus on residential living. The Coordinator manages a comprehensive educational and accountability program that promotes student success by providing various means to resolution, proactive education, and holistic support of students. In concert with key stokeholds, the Coordinator assesses programmatic effectiveness and develops structures that aide in achieving goals.

Responsibilities:

Case Adjudication & Management



  • Assists in the management and maintenance of centralized communication and data systems;
  • Serves as Incident Manager for assigned Residential Communities by overseeing incoming reports, conducting any necessary follow up with reporting parties or witnesses, working with the Assistant Director to assign charges and case resolution pathways, and overseeing the delegation of cases to Hearing Officers within Residential Communities;
  • Oversees and advises the Residential Adjudication Board administrative processes;
  • Adjudicates conduct hearings and implements sanctioning; and
  • Contributes to the execution of restorative justice and mediation routes to resolution.


Student Engagement & Learning



  • Collaborates with the Assistant Director of Community Standards and other key stakeholders in the marketing and education of the policies and procedures as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct and the Resident Student Handbook;
  • Assists in the marketing of the Residential Adjudication Board and recruitment of the Board Members;
  • Develops marketing (both web and print) that educates students, staff, and parents on policies and procedures outlined in the Code of Student Conduct and the Resident Student Handbook;
  • Advises and guides the Residence Life Staff to identify, develop, and implement needs-based programming and initiatives to engage residents and foster community development;
  • Develops, modifies, and coordinates educational curriculum related to sanction courses; and
  • Develops and sustains educational sanctions that support all policy violations.


Staff Training & Supervision



  • Assists in training, development, and creation of resources for the Housing & Residence Life staff;
  • Recruits and trains staff interested in serving as an instructor for internal educational sanctions;
  • Advises the Residential Adjudication Board;
  • Serves as the primary faculty/staff point of contact (as advisor) for the Residential Adjudication board; and
  • Supervises one Graduate Professional Assistant.


University Partners



  • Collaborates with campus partners on a peer mediation program that educates students and staff on mediation techniques, resources regarding referrals, and programmatic opportunities;
  • Collaborates with University Life units on programming related to responsible alcohol consumption and interpersonal violence prevention; and
  • Serves on boards, committees, or councils as delegated by the Assistant Director of Community Standards.


Assessment & Research



  • Reports on trends within Residential Communities;
  • Connects with peer institutions and researches best practices for case adjudication and sanctioning; and
  • Assists in the implementation and evaluation of educational sanctioning initiatives and programs.


Required Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Professional work experience with case management and adjudication, typically obtained in 2 or more years;
  • Experience working with Student Conduct, Academic Integrity, or Residence Life processes;
  • Prior work experience in Higher Education in a professional or student employment position;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Effective decision making skills, including the ability to make decisions involving complex factors;
  • Ability to engage in difficult conversations; and
  • Ability to balance multiple competing priorities.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing digital platforms for assessment, availability management/scheduling, document sharing, distance collaboration, web authoring, and course management;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in training and development, execution, and assessment;
  • Prior experience in a mentorship role;
  • Prior experience in volunteer management or managing without formal authority;
  • Knowledge and skills in assessment;
  • Interdepartmental collaboration skills; and
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills.
