Job Description
Scope of Position The Ohio State University Medical Center is committed to enhancing the quality of care our patients receive. The Perioperative Technician functions as an integral member of a team of care providers in the Operating Rooms of the Perioperative Nursing Unit, who reflect a culture of cooperation, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. The team, consisting of the registered nurse, surgical technologist, anesthesiologist, surgeon, anesthesia technician and perioperative technician provide patient care and supportive services that are directed toward achievement of patient care outcomes, improving service levels, reducing the length of hospitalization and decreasing costs. The Operating room, located on the fourth floor of Doan and Rhodes Halls, consists of 22 Operating Rooms with an additional operating Rooms on the fifth floor of Doan Hall and is staffed 24 hours per day. Position Summary Performs technical skills related to patient contact. Provides emergency care measures as appropriate. Assists in meeting the patient's emotional needs. Completes documentation in an accurate, concise and timely manner, provides indirect care to a group of patients by facilitating perioperative care. Follows universal precautions, safe handling guidelines, and all other infection control standards. Provides for safety/security of self and others and follows special precautions as related to Anesthesia/surgical areas and other appropriate locations. Promotes positive attitude to staff, families, patient/guests as well as maintains patient confidentiality.

Required Qualifications
Strong reading, writing and simple math (add, subtract, multiply and divide) skills required. Successful completion of perioperative technician training program is required. Previous health care or service oriented field experience in an acute health care setting is preferred. CPR certification preferred.

55% of time Clinical skills management that enhance the nursing process

  • Demonstrates understanding of job responsibilities and uses appropriate knowledge and skills to effectively complete work.
  • Performs technical skills related to patient comfort.
  • Provides emergency care measures as appropriate. Initiates CPR, assists in code blue situations.
  • Assists in meeting the patients emotional needs.
  • Demonstrates compassion and sensitivity to patients, families, visitors, and other staff. Is courteous to others and promotes mutual respect.
  • Anticipates needs of customers and assumes responsibility for solving customer problems.
  • Completes documentation in an accurate, concise and timely manner.

  • Provides indirect care to a group of patients by facilitating Perioperative care and assuring Perioperative readiness of surgical and anesthesia supplies and equipment according to the unit Policy and Procedures and review of pertinent records.
  • Performs Perioperative directed activities as requested.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and follows the appropriate channels of communication designated isolation procedures according to the OSUMC and Infection Control Policy and Procedure.
  • Provides for safety/security of self and others according to the OSUMC and Infection Control Policy and Procedure.
  • Follows special precautions including side rails/restraints, suicide precautions, seizure precautions, electrical, radiation and oxygen safety measures according to Division of Nursing Policy and Procedure.
  • Assists with Operating Room readiness activities, e.g. post procedure, makes bed, removes trash, linen, removes and replaces canisters, returns unused surgical supplies to appropriate storage, cleans anesthesia monitoring devices, lead cables and back stand, removes mask and filter.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to providing the highest quality service to all customers.

20% of time Area/equipment maintenance related to maintaining cleanliness and organization of equipment and Perioperative areas

  • Maintains a clean and organized environment in the Perioperative Unit.
  • Demonstrates cost-effective use of supplies and of own time and others time; Systematically organizes and prioritizes work.
  • Changes and/or replaces gas cylinders as needed and facilitates repair of equipment.

20% of time Dispenses/transports supplies and equipment to appropriate

  • Processes and transports stock and equipment to appropriate locations according to supply needs and department standards.

5% of time Personal/professional development which enhances the growth and development of the individual to contribute to the immediate work environment.

  • Actively participates in the orientation process by taking responsibility of self study, identifying personal limitations and seeking assistance appropriately to ensure safe provision of patient.
  • Participates in unit development by orienting new staff members to the unit and to hospital routines as directed by the immediate supervisor and provides appropriate feedback.
  • Annually attends all mandatory inservice/education offerings to include fire, tornado/disaster, infection control in services and CPR certification.
  • Attends and actively participates in scheduled unit staff meetings.
  • Formulates job related goals at least annually and develops a plan to accomplish them; assumes responsibility for meeting goals.
