GENERAL PURPOSE

  • Independently perform and coordinate the building of prototypes, models and mock-ups to a degree of completion required by Design/Development teams for proper evaluation and/or presentation.
  • Works from sketches, layout drawings, completed detailed drawings, CAD data as available in accordance with predetermined schedule and/or priorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Achieve and maintain a depth and breadth of technical proficiency of new modeling techniques, apply to projects and share with team.
  • Active in evaluating and implementing new process's techniques, tools/equipment and materials used in the M.S.
  • Assist in the development and training of model maker apprentice and/or model maker associate.
  • Collaborate on product design solutions with Design/Development to influence feasibility of production or prototype runs.
  • Design and build fixtures or molds as needed to aid in the building of models and prototypes.
  • Develop and/or build models, prototypes and mock-ups in the most feasible way, per customer requirements, goals and objectives.
  • Develop skills to help improve existing processes used within the HMI model shop, Lean / C.I. efforts.
  • Interact effectively with internal and external resources including model makers, model shop manager, outside vendors, suppliers, designers, engineers, plant personnel, program managers and other appropriate resources.
  • Perform additional requirements as operations may require in support of achieving business objectives.
  • Perform responsibilities in a safe and organized manner in compliance with state, federal and company policy.
  • Proficiently utilize standard model shops equipment such as, lathe, mill, saws, welding equipment, hand tools and inspection equipment, independently.
  • Provide vital feedback to manager, MM senior and customers on projects completed.
  • Recommend and assist in the determination of materials, method, procedure and technology used in building models and prototypes.
  • Self-starter, reliable, motivated in ones work, with a strong ability to work in a team environment.
  • Support model shop manager or model maker senior with cost, timing estimations as required.
  • Work independently and as part of team in a fast paced environment to help solve development problems through physical modeling.
  • Works under minimal or no supervision.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

Education/Experience - Not Parsed

Licenses and Certifications/Skills and Abilities

  • U.S. Dept. of Labor Journeyman card for Design Model Maker or Associates Degree in Model Making.
  • 5-10 years experience in Design/Development Model Shop, successful in proven performance.
  • History of demonstrated knowledge, understanding and experience working with a variety of materials such as clay, wood, metal, sheet metal, plastics, epoxies, urethanes and metal castings.
  • Familiarity with Industrial Design concepts and processes.
  • Applied knowledge and understanding of manufacturing processes, related to wood, metal forming and plastic.
  • Well-developed conceptual, analytical and communication skills.
  • Professional understanding of the Rapid-Prototyping and Rapid-Tooling industry and processes, to talk knowledgeable with customers.
  • Working knowledge of the modeling technologies and equipment used in CAD/CAM, CNC, Cast Urethane, Welding, Painting, Vacuum Forming.
  • Ability to make sound decisions without all relevant data present.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Professional understanding of Model Shop vendor resources.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commonly available office environment software such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and use of Internet.
