Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Provost, the Vice President for Student Affairs provides direct leadership over major units of the university that include (but is not limited to) the following functions:

  1. Student Conduct and Wellness, which includes the Dean of Students, Student Wellness, Counseling Services, Student Conduct, Community Standards and Care, Norse Violence Prevention, and the Office for Student Accessibility.

  2. Student Engagement and Inclusiveness, which includes Student Engagement, the Student Union, Campus Recreation, Conference Management and Event Services, African American Student Initiatives, Latino Student Initiatives, and LGBTQ+ Student Initiatives.

  3. University Housing, which includes Residence Life, Operations, and Facilities.


This position works with other major divisions across the campus to form collaborative partnerships in the interest of student achievement and success, to enrich and enhance student curricular and co-curricular experience.
Primary Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serves on the president's cabinet as a strategic advisor to the president, provost, and the executive leadership, providing direction and guidance for advancing the University's priorities of increased retention, graduation, and sense of community for both on-campus and on-line students.

  • Provide executive leadership, strategic planning, and oversight of all units within Student Affairs in the areas of programming, policy development, and management of fiscal, facility and human resources.

  • Serve as an advocate for students and advise other senior administrators on matters of student development, and mental and physical health.

  • Provide strategic leadership in developing and implementing high quality, data-driven, student-centered, innovative, non-academic initiatives that reach, engage, and excite all students, while promoting their success, belonging, and community.

  • Align programs, services, and student employment with research-centered learning outcomes and/or evidence-based practices that enhance academic and post-graduation success.

  • Manage an increasingly complex multi-million-dollar budget, including conference revenue, grants, and general funds.

  • Promote positive student sense of belonging by maintaining open, accessible, effective, and frequent communication with both student leaders and students at large, serving as their advocate for the co-curricular needs of both on-campus and on-line students.

  • Develop and enhance the assessment for activities in Student Affairs, including the effective and efficient delivery of student services programs and increasing student belonging and engagement, for both on-campus and on-line students.

  • Ensure that all students' rights are supported by practices and policies that are fundamentally fair and focused on student development.

  • Ensure that all programs and services within the division comply with all relevant state and federal laws and university policies.

Qualifications
Core Competencies and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of, and ability to manage the major responsibilities of various and complex functions related to Student Affairs.

  • Knowledge of trends and best practices in student development programs and services, especially those serving online and commuter students.

  • Must be able to foster an exciting, engaging, collegial, and collaborative culture that capitalizes on the richness of the NKU community and furthers its commitment to academic excellence, student success, and sense of belonging.



  • Must have experience serving as an advocate for students and advising senior administrators in matters of student success. Previous experience with online students or virtual programming a plus.

  • Proven ability to make informed decisions after weighing viewpoints from all the stakeholders as well as the ability to develop and implement innovative strategies to meet the needs of all constituents.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, openly, and transparently with a range of external constituents, faculty, students, and staff.

  • Must be able to communicate clearly, with a demonstrated commitment to student success and the ability to build strong relationships with and among all types of students.

  • Must have demonstrated commitment to advancing the success of underserved groups.

  • Must have experience managing programming and services related to student wellbeing.

  • Ability to maintain and advocate the highest level of compliance and integrity in all areas.

Education & Experience:

  • Master's degree required. A doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D) in college student affairs, higher education, or related field is preferred.

  • Minimum seven (7) years of related experiences that demonstrate leadership and management in higher education with at least three (3) years in of increasing responsibility in student affairs.

  • Must have a history of progressively responsible experience in demonstrating successful leadership and management strategies within a college or university.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Reliable judgment, sound discretion, and excellent interpersonal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work collegially with a wide and diverse constituency.

  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with the various constituencies of the University, meeting people where they are.

  • Excellent leadership skills, with an ability to build team morale and promote team spirit, as well as an ability to foster an innovative and inclusive environment that attracts and retains high-quality faculty, students, and staff.

  • Excellent initiative with resourcefulness, sound judgment, and an ability to find creative and practical solutions to problems.

  • Must have the ability to manage a large and complex budget.
