Marshalltown Hospital is seeking a skilled and dedicated Surgical Technologist II to join our surgical team. The Surgical Technologist II plays a vital role in facilitating the safe and effective execution of invasive surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the surgical team to ensure a safe operating room environment, ensure instrumentation functions properly, and uphold the highest standards of patient safety throughout the procedure. Proficient in the duties of first or second scrub person or as an assistant circulator, the Surgical Technologist II brings expertise and precision to every procedure, contributing to our commitment to exceptional patient care.


Responsibilities
  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure in their assigned specialty area.
  • Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
  • Participates in collaborative review of pertinent patient information for accuracy of procedure and associated factors influencing preparedness for procedure. (i.e. H&P, Consents, Radiographic reports)
  • Assisting in circulating duties, will obtain additional instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary while the surgical procedure is in progress.
  • Monitors conditions in the operating room and constantly assesses the needs of the patient and surgical team.
  • In the second assisting role, carries out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissue. This role is distinct from that of the first assistant and may, in some circumstances, be performed at the same time as the scrub role.
  • Strives to enhance personal technical and clinical competence in all job related duties.
  • Assists with orientation of new departmental personnel.
  • Participates in the clinical instruction of students as assigned in the operating room

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduation from a nationally accredited surgical technology program.
  • Certified through a national certifying body. Must maintain active certification throughout employment.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
  • Multicultural sensitivity.
  • Customer/patient focused.
  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
  • Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities. May drive a UPH vehicle, rental or own vehicle.
  • Flexibility in accepting assignments and works well as a team member and individual.
  • Ability to perform under time constraints.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.

Preferred:

  • Associate Degree or higher encouraged.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook
