Position Description:




The Medical College Physicians APP Hematology and Oncology Fellowship is an innovative one-year training program that teaches APP fellows to become highly skilled in the multidisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based management of complex patient care. The curriculum is composed of multi-modal learning opportunities that may include the following: in-person didactics, online classrooms, simulation, proctored procedures and/or mentored clinical rotations. During the program, fellows will have rotations in thoracic oncology, Genitourinary oncology, GI oncology, Breast oncology, Leukemia, Lymphoma/Myeloma, BMT/CAR-T, Melanoma, Head and neck oncology, Gynecological oncology, Continuity clinic, Palliative medicine, Benign hematology, and 24 hr. Clinic. Elective rotations (may include): Psych oncology, Interventional radiology, Sarcoma, Phase 1/precision medicine, Neuro oncology, Radiation oncology.

Mission

Provide a structured clinical and professional educational to foster growth of highly skilled nurse practitioners (NP) and physician assistants (PA) in multidisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based management of complex patients through clinical and didactic experiences and professional mentorship.

Program Purpose

The Medical College Physician's APP Hematology and Oncology Fellowship is a one-year training program that teaches an APP fellow to become highly skilled in the multidisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based management of complex and challenging cancer patients in inpatient units and outpatient clinics in hematology and oncology.

It provides specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH policies and procedures. An innovative 12-month curriculum composed of in-person didactics, online classrooms, proctored procedures, and mentored clinical rotations. Fellows will have rotations in the inpatient units and outpatient clinics of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, and in related areas, in the Froedtert Hospital Cancer Network.

Fellowship Expectations

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Oncologic intervention in blended inpatient and outpatient environment as a member of the Hematology and Oncology team.
  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriate communicates and documents information.
  • Privledged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Hematology and Oncology services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  • APP fellows must meet and maintain the expectations outlined in the APP fellowship handbook.
  • Successful completion of the APP fellowship program requires meeting all requirements outlined in APP fellowship handbook within the 12-month duration of the program. Upon meeting all program requirements, APP fellows earn a certificate of completion.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

  • Advanced Practice Nurse: National board certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner.
