Summary:
The mission of the Wayne UNC Health Care Police Department is to contribute to and promote the greater mission of Wayne UNC Healthcare by facilitating a safe, secure and service oriented environment. The department does this by offering crime prevention programs to promote safety and deter criminal activity. Wayne UNC Health Care Police Officers conduct various law enforcement activities including patrolling within the geographic jurisdiction, conducting criminal investigations, crime prevention, assisting motorists, traffic control, and providing security at special events on the hospital campus. The Police Officers participate in and attend training exercises and classes in law enforcement, basic life support, and other emergency response areas. Police Officers perform other assigned duties as requested.

Responsibilities:
1. Maintains high visibility through vehicle and foot patrol in an effort to deter criminal activity.
2. Directs traffic flow, initiates traffic accident investigations and/or conducts the actual investigation when property damage and serious injury is involved, assists motorists and citizens as needed, and resolves and reports traffic problems, safety concerns, hazards, etc.
3. Detects and deters crime, conducts searches within legal and safe parameters, and conducts non-arrest detentions as required.
4. Makes motor vehicle stops, detects DWI situations and processes related arrests.
5. Testifies in court to provide evidence or as a witness in traffic or criminal cases.
6. Utilizes citizen input in the identification of community issues, develops community contacts, coordinates, plans and conducts community programs and acts as a resource in the development of similar programs.
7. Recognizes and implements crime prevention techniques including environment factors conducive to criminal activity.
8. Identifies and secures crime scenes, processes crime scenes, uses legal interrogation techniques to obtain information from witnesses, victims, and suspects. Records facts and prepares reports to document preliminary and follow-up investigations.
9. Identifies offenses follows established procedures for submission of evidence, and takes appropriate action including obtaining/writing and executing search and arrest warrants when indicated.
10. Conducts investigations related to misdemeanors and felonies.
11. The development of prosecution summaries and testifying in court when needed.
12. Communicates with other law enforcement agencies according to department procedures.
13. Operation and proper use of the Police Pak call log is required.
14. Calls are prioritized appropriately; pertinent information is obtained and effectively communicated to field staff.
15. Performs a variety of tasks to include answering the phone, handling walk-in traffic, responding to radio communications, processing alarms, operating the CCTV system, etc. Accomplishes responsibilities with a calm demeanor, particularly during stressful events.
16. Responsible for conducting appropriate inspections at the beginning and ending of each shift and reporting any damage or needed action.
17. Properly operates and accounts for all vehicle equipment including police radios, emergency lights and sirens, etc.
18. Reports immediately to Wayne UNC Health Care for traffic and crowd control when recalled for Disaster or other emergency situations.
19. Transports all hospital bank deposits and mail.
20. Accompanies visitors, volunteers, and hospital staff to his/her vehicle when requested in a timely and professional manner.
21. Ensures appropriate and professional interaction will all employees, patients and visitors.
22. Is flexible to work varied shifts as needed to ensure adequate departmental coverage or in the event of an emergency.

Other information:

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification
A valid North Carolina Driver's License and a driving record that will allow for insurance coverage.
Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
As set forth in N.C.G.S. 74E-8, applicants for commission as a company police officer and a commissioned company police officer must meet and maintain the same minimum pre-employment and in-service standards as are required for State law enforcement officers by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission, and must meet or maintain any other pre-employment and in-service requirements set by the Attorney General. Out-of-State candidates should have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. Out-of-State candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered. Out-of-State candidates cannot have a break in service from the out of state agency of more than one year. All out-of-state candidates may possibly have to complete 96 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC certification, pass the State exam or other requirements set forth by the North Carolina Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission. IAHSS Basic and Advanced Certifications preferred.

Experience
* At least two years of law enforcement experience in a healthcare or campus law enforcement setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with patients, their families, the public and hospital team members.
* Good decision making and critical thinking skills.
* Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
* Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.

Valid NC Driver's License: Yes
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
