Job Summary
The Grounds Worker I is responsible for maintaining campus grounds, landscapes, buildings, and outdoor facilities to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment. This role performs groundskeeping, landscaping, basic facility maintenance, and minor repair work while operating various hand tools, power equipment, and maintenance vehicles. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, physically capable, and able to work both independently and as part of a maintenance team.
Key Responsibilities
- Mow lawns and trim grass around sidewalks, flower beds, buildings, and other landscaped areas.
- Prune shrubs and trees to maintain healthy growth and appearance.
- Remove leaves, branches, debris, litter, and other outdoor waste from campus grounds.
- Plant, fertilize, water, and maintain grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Apply herbicides and insecticides as directed to maintain landscaping.
- Maintain driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, storm drains, and other outdoor areas.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas; spread salt as needed.
- Repair fences, gates, walls, walkways, irrigation systems, and other outdoor structures.
- Operate trucks, tractors, mowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment safely.
- Assist with maintenance and repairs of campus buildings, structures, equipment, and grounds.
- Perform minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, and electrical repairs.
- Change light bulbs and pressure wash buildings, sidewalks, furniture, and equipment.
- Deliver supplies, materials, and equipment throughout campus as needed.
- Set up facilities for special events and inspect areas for safety hazards.
- Attend required classroom and virtual training sessions.
- Follow all campus safety policies, OSHA regulations, and maintenance procedures.
- Report accidents, injuries, and safety concerns promptly.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum of one year of full-time labor, trades, or grounds maintenance experience.
- General knowledge of groundskeeping tools, materials, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating lawn mowers, tractors, pressure washers, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
- Experience performing minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, or electrical repairs.
- Knowledge of landscaping, irrigation systems, and general facility maintenance.
- Experience working in a campus, school, or commercial maintenance environment.
Work Environment
- Outdoor and indoor campus maintenance environment.
- Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, and other environmental conditions.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and operating maintenance equipment.
- Requires lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds continuously.

Additional Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver's license and meet Tennessee driver qualification standards.
- Must successfully complete a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and FBI background check, fingerprinting, employment verification, criminal history review, child abuse records check, and professional/personal reference checks.
- Due to the position being located at a school, any discrepancies identified during the background investigation or fingerprinting process may result in disqualification from employment.
