The Sports Performance Dietitian is responsible for delivering comprehensive sports nutrition services to athletes while supporting performance programming within Springfield Clinic's Fitness & Performance (Sports Medicine) teams. This role integrates evidence-based nutrition strategies with strength and conditioning support to optimize athletic performance, recovery, and overall health.

The Sports Performance Dietitian collaborates closely with strength and conditioning staff, athletic trainers, and healthcare providers to deliver coordinated, athlete-centered care. This position includes dedicated time working with local student-athletes and may assist with the implementation of strength, conditioning, and personal training programs.

Reports to the Manager, Sports Medicine

Principal Responsibilities

  • Assess, evaluate, and document the nutritional status and needs of student-athletes using evidence-based standards of care.
  • Develop and implement individualized and team-based nutrition plans to enhance performance, recovery, and overall health outcomes.
  • Provide nutrition counseling, education, and goal-setting strategies tailored to student-athletes and active populations.
  • Collaborate with physicians, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning staff to align nutrition, medical, and performance plans.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials, presentations, and programming for athletes, staff, and community partners.
  • Provide guidance on performance-related topics including hydration, supplementation, weight management, and recovery strategies.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of sport-specific strength and conditioning programs in collaboration with coaching staff.
  • Evaluate athletes' physical condition, monitor progress, and support adjustments to training and nutrition plans.
  • Observe training sessions and provide feedback to improve performance, technique, and injury prevention
  • Serve as a liaison between student athletes, coaches, healthcare providers, and Sports Medicine staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies and standards, including documentation, safety protocols, and incident reporting.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Nutrition, Dietetics, Exercise Science, or related field.
  • Experience working with athletes or sports teams is preferred.
  • Experience in both nutrition counseling and athletic performance environments preferred.

Licenses/Certificates

  • Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration required
  • Current certification as Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) required
  • CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines required within 30 days.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic keyboard and computer skills
  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills and be able to walk long distances
  • Physical agility, strength, and endurance in a variety of settings

Working Environment

  • Extensive walking, standing, kneeling and heavy lifting
