The main function of the Biotechnology (
BIT) laboratory assistant is to assist our staff in preparing for weekly laboratory sessions, specifically supporting our
BIT 410/510 Biotechnology "Core" class. Our courses strive to expose students to a variety of cutting-edge molecular biology tools including techniques for studying
DNA, bacteria, proteins, viruses, and cell culture.
This position offers an ideal chance for a post-baccalaureate candidate to transfer student laboratory experiences into a fast-paced, 40 hr/week molecular biology teaching laboratory role, learning from talented people with an impressive range of interests.
Weekly Responsibilities:
- Prepare, test, and distribute reagents to be used in student laboratory exercises
- Aid in laboratory setup, maintenance, and re-stocking of consumables across laboratory spaces
- Accurately record deliveries and store them appropriately
- Provide husbandry care for model organisms
- Maintain clean and safe working environment
Occasional Responsibilities:
- Provide hands-on assistance & instruction to students during laboratory sessions
- Join staff at outreach programs that present science to the public
- Update/author LabArchives protocols used by students
- Assist faculty/Lab Manager with research projects
- Offer a fresh perspective about how BIT can elevate its performance
