Overview
The Deputy Fire Marshal ensures fire prevention, life safety and education of Utah State University campus, through performing fire code inspections of all buildings under the jurisdiction of the Utah State University Fire Marshal's Office through enforcement of the International Building, Fire and NFPA life safety codes. The Deputy Fire Marshal will work independently at times under the direction of the Fire Marshal and Assistant Fire Marshal, relying on experience, knowledge and judgment to accomplish fire prevention and life safety throughout the Utah State University community.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct fire and life safety inspections in accordance with adopted codes, standards, and university policies.
  • Maintain USU's fire extinguisher inventory and ensure accurate, up-to-date service records.
  • Complete fire inspection site visits to statewide and extension campus locations throughout Utah.
  • Identify code deficiencies, document findings, and issue notices of violation per established procedures.
  • Verify corrective actions through re-inspections and thorough documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, violations, system testing, and compliance activities.
  • Assist with inspections, testing, and coordination of fire protection systems, including fire alarms and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Provide code interpretation and guidance to campus stakeholders within established parameters.
  • Issue Hot Work Permits to campus Facilities personnel and external contractors.
  • Support fire and life safety review of construction and renovation projects, including plan reviews, site inspections, and acceptance testing as assigned.
  • Conduct and assist with fire and life safety training programs, including fire extinguisher training and evacuation drills.
  • Assist with fire alarms and incidents during assigned work hours and on-call rotations, following established protocols.
  • Maintain knowledge of campus buildings, fire protection systems, and emergency response access points.
  • Attend required training, certification classes, and professional development.
  • Coordinate with event organizers and university staff to ensure fire and life safety compliance during after-hours, sporting, and campus-wide events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of this position.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of International Building and Fire Codes, as well as National Fire Protection Association standards (NFPA 13, 13R, 20, 24, 25, and 72) and State of Utah Fire Marshal's Office fire prevention requirements.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid driver's license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials
  • Basic Life Support (CPR/AED) certification.
  • The following certifications shall be obtained within 18 months of hire: State of Utah Fire Marshal - Fire Suppression Service Certificate of Registration; State of Utah Fire Marshal - Sprinkler Level I; State of Utah Fire Marshal - Master Fire Alarm Certification; ICC Fire Inspector I; ICC Fire Plans Examiner; FEMA ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following certifications are preferred or obtainable within two years of hire:
  • ICC Fire Inspector II
  • ICC Commercial Building Inspector
  • FEMA ICS-300
  • FEMA ICS-400

Candidates must have the strength necessary to perform all duties, including lifting, pushing, and pulling heavy objects. The role also requires the ability to assume positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting.
