We are currently accepting applications for the part-time (18 hours per week) position.

Veterans Services Officer
Human Services Department

Hourly Range: $30.47 - $34.72
Non-Benefited

The REQUIRED Town of Lexington application form, a cover letter, and resume must be received in the

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Summary Assists the Veterans Services District Director in providing State and Federal services, benefits and
activities to eligible Veterans and their families. Performs all other related work, as required.

Essential Functions
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that

may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the

work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

* Meets with Veterans and families to discuss personal and family's financial situations and to determine
qualifications for Chapter 115 benefits. Compiles documentation. Verifies qualifying application data.
Approves and submits applications to the Executive Office of Veteran Services. Administers benefits for
qualified customers.

* Retains certification for Veteran Service Officer by successful completion of test.

* Provides intake and assessment assistance for Veterans Services Program in Lexington and Bedford.

* Conducts home visits in Lexington and Bedford with homebound Veterans and their families.

* Assists the Veterans Services District Director in creating reports on program activities. Delete Ensures
maintenance of files, records, and financial data regarding Veterans.

* Collaborates with the Patriotic Holiday Committee in Bedford, and local Veterans groups to coordinate
Veterans' participation, including, Veterans' Day Parade, Memorial Day celebrations, and Patriot's Day
events.

* Coordinates with Department of Public Works the decoration of Veterans' grave sites at cemeteries in
Lexington and Bedford.

* Remains current on veteran benefits. Participates in trainings, conferences, workshops, and meetings on
Veterans' Services.

* Coordinates weekly food deliveries to homebound Veterans.

* Performs other similar or related duties, as required or as situation dictates.

Supervision
Supervision Scope: Performs varied and responsible functions requiring a specialized working knowledge of
Veterans Services and departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative, particularly in
situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures.

Supervision Received: Works under the broad supervision of the Veterans Services District Director, setting
and following department rules, regulations and policies. Duties require the ability to plan and perform
operations and independently complete tasks, according to prescribed time schedules.

Supervision Given: None.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
College degree or equivalent plus (two) 2 years of increasingly responsible human services experience or an
equivalent combination of education, training, and experience are required. Computer literacy is required.

Special Requirements:
Must be a veteran of the United States armed services as specified by the Massachusetts Department of
Veterans' Services.
Valid Massachusetts Driver's License is required.
Must have access to a personal vehicle for travel between the Towns and home visits to Veterans.

Knowledge: Knowledge of business letter writing and basic report preparation techniques. Knowledge of
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Knowledge of principles and procedures of filing.
Knowledge of principles and practices of municipal budget preparation and administration. Knowledge of basic
accounting and purchasing processes. Advanced knowledge of techniques of social services programs.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations related to Veteran's services. Knowledge
and skill with principles and practices of record keeping. Knowledge of administrative office practices and
procedures. Knowledge of town government.

Ability: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to interact
appropriately and tactfully with customers. Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records. Ability to explain
Department regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
Ability to set and follow detailed timetables. Ability to multi-task. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to
perform administrative services. Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and projects. Ability to perform basic
financial tasks. Ability to use good judgment and to take the initiative. Ability to maintain effective work
relationships. Ability to manage an environment which involves close contact with the public. Ability to

manage discord and disagreement from customers.

Skills: Proficient customer service and organization skills. Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills with MS Office Suite applications. Proficient skill with new and existing computers
and software applications supporting departmental operations. Proficient skills with report generation.

Job Environment
* Work is performed in office environment with moderate noise levels, and with frequent interruptions.
Work is subject to fluctuations, and administrative deadlines. Employee works weekend day and
evenings, and weekday evenings.
* Operates computer, printer, telephone, copier, facsimile machine, postage machine, safe, and all other
standard office equipment.
* The employee has frequent contact with federal agencies, town department staff, Lexington based
businesses, state organizations and Officials, surrounding towns and cities, committees, boards,
consultants, the public, and residents.
* The employee has access to confidential information.
* Errors could result in delays or loss of service, monetary loss, and legal ramifications.

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully
perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate, or hear, sit, stand, walk, use
hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or
move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Close, distance, color, peripheral vision and depth perception are
required. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges is necessary. This position requires the ability to
operate a keyboard at efficient speed and to operate a motor vehicle.
