Summary

Under minimal supervision, perform complex scientific experiments for sponsored research projects, including compilation and analysis of data generated.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Carry out routine and complex experiments, and help optimize workflows.

  • Monitor inventory and order lab supplies; carry out assigned duties for ordering, maintaining supply of inventory.

  • Design and perform cell culture experiments, western blots, qPCR analysis and RT-PCR with minimal supervision.

  • Prepare media and maintain cells by various culturing techniques

  • Participate in meetings with Principal Investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed.

  • Oversee daily lab operation in the absence of the supervisor or Principal Investigator.

  • Teach and train new members of the lab in relevant techniques and analytical procedures.

  • Assist in development and implementation of research protocols.

  • Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.

  • Help evaluate, interpret, and assess experimental data and quality control of assays.

  • Retrieve information from library and computerized databases; assist in preparation of manuscripts and presentations.

  • Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research.

  • Participate in seminars, journal clubs and other educational events.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

* Experience with rodent cancer models is essential.

* Experience with preclinical imaging research, including MRI is essential.

* Work requires definite skilled and accurate physical operations requiring some closely coordinated performance and manual dexterity.

* Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.

* Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

* Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required. Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies.

* Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol. Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise. Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures. Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
