THE POSITION

As a Forest Technician with the Department of Agriculture, you will help protect trees and plant life across the state. This position gives you the opportunity to explore the outdoors while supporting important pest control efforts. Your work will help keep forests thriving for future generations. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides field support for the Bureau of Plant Industry through tree inventories, pest surveys, and activities that help control the Spotted Lanternfly. The work includes collecting field data, assisting in pest management activities, and supporting statewide projects. As a Forest Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Tree and Pest Surveys: Conduct tree inventories, perform pest surveys, and prepare maps for field projects
  • Project Support: Assist with statewide experimental projects and pest control activities related to Spotted Lanternfly
  • Field Coordination: Communicate with property owners and contractors to support pre-control activities
  • Monitoring Sites: Establish monitoring plots, deploy traps, inspect traps, and summarize collected data
  • Reporting Tasks: Prepare written reports and maintain electronic field data
  • Collaboration and Outreach: Participate in cooperative efforts, attend meetings, and represent the agency at outreach events

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • This position is federally funded and will continue based on funding availability.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 5 days per pay period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate's degree in forest technology; or
  • Completion of equivalent formal education in forestry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.

Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
