Job Overview

The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Specialist is in the early stages of specialization and training within the ECMO program. This role provides extracorporeal life support to patients requiring mechanical assistance for respiratory, cardiac, or circulatory failure, while continuing to gain experience in the more advanced aspects of ECMO care. The ECMO Specialist also delivers direct nursing care by floating to Acute Care and/or Critical Care units as needed, and works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to support high-quality patient outcomes.

This position is eligible for relocation assistance, if relocating from 100 miles or greater.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the monitoring and maintenance of the ECMO circuit under the supervision of experienced team members, following established hospital protocols. Supports response efforts during planned and emergent changes in ECMO flow.
  • Follows departmental guidelines to support anticoagulation management and fluid balance, with guidance from senior staff.
  • Provides patient- and family-centered care in one or more clinical areas, applying developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive practices while continuing to build clinical skills.
  • Communicates patient values and preferences to the care team and supports implementation of care plans and education efforts, under supervision.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to support safe transitions of care and consistent, individualized care and education for patients and families.
  • Adheres to clinical policies, procedures, and safety practices to help reduce risk and ensure a safe care environment.
  • Applies evidence-based guidelines and protocols in the delivery of care, seeking support when needed to reinforce learning and best practices.
  • Participates in all required department trainings, meetings, and orientation activities to build knowledge and competence within the ECMO specialty.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing or bachelor's degree in respiratory care/AS in Respiratory Care with a Bachelor's in an associated Health related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of critical care experience, at least two (2) years in pediatric critical care.

Equivalency: Associate degree in respiratory therapy or respiratory Care plus two (2) years of clinical experience may substitute for the bachelor's degree.

Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) or current Respiratory Therapist in the State of Colorado.

Certification(s):

  • BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire.

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

  • Adult Advanced Life Support (ACLS), and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC).

  • NRP- Neonatal Resuscitation Program for Respiratory Therapists

  • Member of a professional organization related to unit/department within 6 months of hire.

    • Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO)

    • American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN)

    • National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)

    • Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB)

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
Hourly Range: $42.27 to $63.41
