DESCRIPTION

The Department of Urology is looking to hire a physician assistant to support our reconstructive urology practice. Under the direction of Urologic Surgeons, provide clinically expert patient care in the support of the Urology Service. PA will provide perioperative care to patients with urethral and ureteral strictures, urologic trauma and others. PA will function independently to see clinic patients and perform procedures including cystoscopy and urethral dilations. PA will be asked to sit for a fluoroscopy licensing exam during the first year of training in order to obtain a license to perform and interpret imaging for reconstructive patients. PA will also see general urology patients.

Outpatient responsibilities include independent evaluation and management of acute and chronic issues, prioritize and resolve issues, escalating to physicians as appropriate. Provide care continuity between inpatient and outpatient setting as needed. Manage and document all communications in the electronic medical record system. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient; demonstrate excellent communication skills, involving the physicians, resident team, nursing staff, family and all other relevant team members to provide excellent comprehensive care. May provide first assist responsibilities in the operating room. Additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • Current ART certification, or BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year relevant experience as a Physician Assistant required.

  • Knowledge of common urologic problems and treatments.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Knowledge of common urologic problems and treatments.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information.

  • Ability to perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • One (1) year experience as a Physician Assistant in Urology preferred.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice. May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond the normal workday. Must be willing to be flexible regarding work site within San Diego County.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

  • Employment is subject to pre-employment physical and a criminal background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $162,530 - $214,104 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $77.84 - $102.54

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
