DESCRIPTION

The Department of Political Science was founded in 1974 and currently has over 40 ladder-rank and 8 adjunct faculty who represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds, methodologies, and approaches. A relatively young department, Political Science has skyrocketed to prominence among peer institutions in the United States. The most recent National Academy of Sciences study ranks UCSD among the top graduate programs in political science in the country. The doctoral program encompasses five broad sub-fields: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory and methodology. Each year, the Department of Political Science supports nearly 100 scheduled undergraduate courses, 40 graduate courses, 35+ summer session courses, over 12,000 undergraduate course enrollments, and 1,000 undergraduate majors; The department receives an estimated 300 graduate program applications and attracts significant levels of extramural funding in support of research projects.

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Affairs, this position is responsible for all aspects of administration and management of the Psychology department's graduate program which serves 65 graduate students and 30 faculty.

Responsibilities include: Academic Advising; Program Planning and Implementation; Curriculum Planning and Implementation; Financial Support; Graduate Admissions, Outreach and Recruitment. Provide recommendations for reaching short and long-term goals and objectives for the program. Additionally, this position is responsible for departmental temporary instructional academic personnel and human resources.

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to graduate students, faculty, and department and school management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in effective academic advising techniques. Knowledge of Political Science course content and faculty areas of interest. Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

  • Working knowledge of accounting principles, business math and bookkeeping for budget planning and analysis. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of finance, general accounting practices, business management, fund accounting, audit trails, and use of cost-centers.

  • Interpersonal skills. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent UC San Diego appropriately to internal and external constituents. Skilled at negotiating conflicts among staff, faculty and students. Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Strong verbal, written and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional and effective interaction with a diverse population.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Strong analytical, inductive and deductive reasoning skills. Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills. Ability to assess funding/staffing problems and skill to identify logical solution. Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Ability to work independently exercising initiative and judgment in the performance of responsibilities. Demonstrated strong organizational and administrative practices. Creativity to analyze and solve unusual and new problems in ways that establish effective and efficient procedures.

  • Ability to multitask; verbal and written communication skills. Ability to analyze work situation and implement long-range plans for the development of systems and procedures to fulfill complex organizational needs.

  • Ability to formulate and retain sight of long-range plans and goals while dealing with a myriad of day-to-day problems. Skills and knowledge to oversee project outcomes, including the ability to adjust to shifting priorities and work under short deadline situations while maintaining composure.

  • Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,400 - $93,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.53 - $44.92

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
