Responsibilities

This position is responsible for performing genomic DNA purification, HLA testing by molecular DNA based methodologies such as next generation sequencing, sequence-based typing and sequence specific primers, performing quality control (QC) and equipment maintenance procedures.

    Perform daily entry of required specimen information and test requisition into the laboratory information system, HistoTrac.
  • Process blood specimens. Isolate cells, DNA for testing, and long-term storage.
  • Perform required procedures for genomic DNA purification and quantitation.
  • Storage of DNA samples by using HistoTrac software to document freezer location.
  • Perform high complexity testing using HLA Class l and Class ll typing methods established in the lab.
  • Generate HLA typing assignments by using sequence analysis software and documentation of results under supervision.
  • Perform and document QC of test reagents and function/performance of equipment under supervision.
  • Perform and document laboratory and equipment maintenance under supervision.
  • Monitor and document operating conditions, such as ambient temperature, freezer/refrigerator temperature.
  • Participate in internal and external proficiency testing programs.
  • Any related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Education and training sufficient to qualify for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist prior to 2009 as specified in NYS-ED Regulation 79-13.4.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or Biological Science or related field.

Experience:

HLA Technologist I

  • 0 to 1 year experience in a biomedical laboratory or performing duties in a related area.

HLA Technologist II

  • At least 3 years of experience in a biomedical laboratory or performing duties in a related area.

Licenses/Certification:

  • Current active NY State License as a Clinical Lab Technologist, or
  • Current active NYS-ED issued Provisional Permit leading to a full license as a Clinical Lab Technologist, or
  • Current active NY State issued Restricted License in Histocompatibility

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of computerized accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of a variety of software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).

Skills:

  • Cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with both individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong attention to detail in all work processes.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle a variety of complex issues and situations. Position requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy in dealing with a variety of staff up to and including executive leadership.

Abilities:

  • Ability to follow SOPs reliably.
  • Ability to competently carry out comprehensive quality control procedures.
  • Ability to document and prepare quality control reports under supervision.
  • Ability to accurately handle and process specimens.
  • Ability to understand principles and functions of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Ability to determine the quality of specimen for testing, including the completeness of documentation. Ability to assign test results under supervision.
  • Ability to determine the quality of specimen testing, including the completeness of documentation. Competent to recognize and diagnose test kit, reagent and/or equipment defect/failure and report to supervisory staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and with authority, both in writing and verbally, to others in one-on-one or small group settings.
  • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and customers in a helpful, courteous and friendly manner while demonstrating sensitivity to and respect for diverse populations.
  • Ability to work in a strong team environment

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the requirements above that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the essential functions of the job.

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed hiring rate is $46.67p/hr. to $60.00p/hr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant's skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.
