What to Expect
The Commercial Energy Service Business Operations team supports the Tesla Energy organization by tracking key performance indicators, operational risks and opportunities, and provides external and internal reporting for Tesla Energy products deployed globally. The team is looking for a Staff Data Engineer to join its Data & Software Solutions Engineering team. In this role, you'll analyze and prepare data for analytical and reporting needs while leading the translation of complex business requirements into project plans and architecting scalable solutions that the team can execute to support rapid growth. The Data & Software Solutions Engineering team is responsible for building infrastructure that enables partner teams to efficiently scale Service operations for a rapidly growing and diverse product deployment portfolio. Additionally, the team builds and maintains data pipelines that consolidate data from disparate systems into structured formats consumable by all teams for reports, dashboards, and operational decisions.
What You'll Do
- Lead all stages of data projects by translating complex business requirements into detailed Data Project Plans, defining key metrics, and delivering production-ready data pipelines that generate actionable insights
- Architect and build scalable data solutions that can support various product, metrics and blend of time-series and transactional data
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines that transform raw data into structured outputs for analytics, ensuring robustness, efficiency, and adaptability within a modern framework
- Communicate data insights, project plans, and technical solutions clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders, fostering alignment on business priorities
- Build intuitive tools and frameworks to empower users (e.g., analysts and operators) to summarize, explore, and self-serve from data sources
- Automate reporting workflows, implement data quality checks, and proactively address inaccuracies or latency issues to maintain high-reliability data ecosystems
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for data-driven optimizations, mentoring junior engineers on best practices for scalable architecture
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, including at least 3 years in a senior or staff-level role leading data initiatives
- Expertise in SQL and proficiency across data architecture paradigms (e.g., MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Vertica, Oracle) and streaming/processing tools (e.g., Kafka, Apache Spark with Python or Scala APIs); strong hands-on experience with Python, including data analysis libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy) and text processing
- Proven track record building and optimizing data pipelines using orchestration tools like Airflow, with experience handling big data at scale (e.g., petabyte volumes)
- Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into structured project plans and architect scalable, executable solutions for engineering teams, including design of modular frameworks that support rapid iteration
- Strong problem-solving, project management, and analytical skills, with a passion for data-driven decision-making and curiosity about emerging technologies
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience collaborating across business and technical teams to turn challenges into impactful data projects

Expected Compensation
$120,000 - $270,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
