JMT's Pittsburgh Construction Management Team is seeking a Coatings Inspector for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), and municipal highway and bridge projects. The successful candidate will apply standard inspection procedures to ongoing activities during and after construction for quality, general safety and conformance to plans, specifications and codes. Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Gather and maintain record documents
  • Make field notes and computations
  • Document daily ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, wind, etc.) during abrasive blasting and coating application
  • Check surface preparation using equipment and/or referenced standards
  • Verify profile depth and levels of salt contamination on the surface
  • Inspect application of coatings (procedures, mixing, thickness) using test instruments and compare with manufacturer's data sheets and project specifications


Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Experience

  • 6 months minimum experience in structural steel coatings inspection
  • 8 hours documented training (internal or external) in the use of basic coatings inspection tools and equipment which includes training in hazardous materials (lead).
  • Computer/IPAD proficiency is preferred


Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Work may be performed at night. Ability to climb required.
