The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for an Open-Rank Associate Research Scientist (ARS) or Research Scientist (RS) to provide support to the Science Program Officer for the United States Scientific Ocean Drilling Coordination Office (SODCO). The ARS or RS will serve as the SODCO Science Program Officer by providing scientific and programmatic input in establishing the SODCO at LDEO. Works with other Principal Investigators (PIs) at LDEO and externally in developing and implementing research projects, collecting and analyzing data, and engaging in outreach initiatives. Will function independently and exercise a high level of expertise. Will receive guidance and direction from, and reports to, the Research Scientist at LDEO serving as the SODCO Director of Science Services and/or the Associate Director of Marine and Large Programs, if needed.

Characteristics and Responsibilities:



  • Assists the Research Scientist serving as the SODCO Director of Science Services in establishing the SODCO at LDEO by providing scientific and programmatic support, particularly regarding science planning activities and science communications.
  • Prepares reports, writes documentation, and makes presentations concerned with SODCO and U.S. scientific ocean drilling and related programs, as requested by SODCO or other LDEO Principal Investigators.
  • Coordinates with Research Scientist serving as SODCO Director of Science Services and the Science Communications Manager on development and implementation of SODCO communications strategies and activities, including SODCO's public-facing website and social media platforms.
  • Supports PIs in special projects to acquire, analyze, and interpret scientific and engineering data. Provides documentation of analysis and project results.
  • Pursues and carries out independent research efforts within overarching goals set by PIs.
  • Other activities, as requested by SODCO Directors.
  • Received guidance and direction from, and reports to, the Research Scientist serving as SODCO Director of Science Services and/or the Associate Director, MLP, if needed. Functions independently within general guidelines and assumes project management responsibilities, as requested. Provides assistance/training for proposal PIs, seagoing scientists/staff, and visiting via online and in-person meetings. Non-routine physical activities limited to field assignments.
  • Assists in monitoring and prioritizing research-related expenditures within a budget of approximately $1,000,000 per year.



The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Earth science. Rank will be commensurate with experience (at least two years for ARS; at least four years for RS). Excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills in English are needed. Seagoing experience and a solid record of scientific publications are preferred. Familiarity with scientific ocean drilling and/or large scientific programs is desirable but not required.

The appointment is renewable annually upon successful performance evalution and availability of funding. Promotion in the Research Scientist track will be possible, based on experience and performance.
