Overview

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee position is an entry level pharmacy technician position that combines an online pharmacy training curriculum with congruent pharmacy work experience to prepare the trainee to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE). The trainee will have the opportunity to advance into a Pharmacy Technician 2 position once he/she has successfully passed the PTCE.

Under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician Trainee will learn a wide range of technical and clerical support functions in both the ambulatory/outpatient and hospital/inpatient pharmacy settings. Assigned responsibilities may include any function necessary to support pharmacy operations and services.
Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works under direct supervision of pharmacists and other pharmacy staff to learn the skills needed to become a pharmacy technician.
  • Assists in preparing, stocking and distributing medications. These tasks may also include procuring, measuring, compounding (sterile and non-sterile), counting, and delivering medications.
  • Fills prescription/medication orders.
  • Maintains inventory and restocks items in the pharmacy.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as updating records, keeping the pharmacy clean and organized, and handling billing and insurance documentation.
  • Responds to the requests of patients and healthcare providers and refer various inquiries to the Pharmacist.
  • Complies with rules, regulations and procedures to help maintain a clean and safe pharmacy.
  • Obtains a working knowledge of the functionality of all equipment and technology in the department.
  • Appropriately triages phone calls and takes detailed phone messages.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in behavior, appearance and interactions.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

IL applicants: License is required.

WI applicants: Registration is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Passing the WI Caregiver Background Check and/or IL Health Care Workers Background Check.

Must be able to follow written/oral instructions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with conversations among partners/physicians/patients/family/visitors/vendors, phone calls, overhead announcements, and equipment operations.
