The Principal Substation Physical Engineer will provide engineering leadership and technical expertise for the design of high-voltage substation facilities (up to and including 765 kV) in support of Worley and its customers. This role is part of the Power Networks team and contributes to the successful delivery of complex substation projects.

This position is based in our Reading, PA office and is not a remote opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Lead substation physical design efforts, including overall engineering and analysis for new substations and switchyards, as well as additions and modifications.

  • Prepare technical specifications and provide procurement support.

  • Develop engineering drawings for high-voltage substations and switchyards, including site plans, layouts, elevations, grounding, conduit, lighting, lightning protection and shielding, control buildings, AC station service, DC systems, and bills of material.

  • Perform auxiliary power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, protection and coordination, ampacity, and battery sizing.

  • Conduct engineering calculations and studies related to grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, lighting, bus systems, transformers, fault levels, and AC/DC auxiliary systems.

  • Support proposal development, including scope input, estimates, and participation in client presentations.

  • Collaborate effectively in a team environment while also managing work independently as required.

  • Ensure deliverables meet Worley and client quality standards, applicable codes, and project procedures.

  • Provide technical guidance and coordinate the work of engineers and designers to support project delivery.

  • Serve as a technical lead on projects, responsible for the quality and completeness of assigned deliverables.

  • Communicate effectively with internal project teams, project management, and external clients.

  • Participate in technical reviews, audits, and independent assessments of engineering work.

  • Coordinate with other disciplines and departments to support integrated project execution.

  • Travel to project sites as needed to perform site walkdowns and field verification.

  • Ensure proper document control and adherence to established document management procedures.


What You Will Bring Technical and Industry Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality, accurate, and timely engineering work.

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals and awareness of related engineering disciplines.

  • Working knowledge of applicable industry standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.

  • Proficiency with electrical engineering software and standard business applications (e.g., MS Office).

  • Experience working on multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Experience in a technical leadership or lead engineer role.

  • Experience supporting project cost estimates and proposal development.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to support collaboration with engineers, designers, clients, and project stakeholders.

Education - Qualifications, Accreditation, Training

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States or the ability to obtain licensure prior to the first day of employment.

  • 12 or more years of experience in substation engineering.
