About our group:

The Head Disk Mechanical Team integrates heads and media for developing the next generation Seagate perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) products. We work with Seagate design centers and component centers around the world to stage novel head disc media interfacial technologies to improve the tribological performance, areal density, and reliability of PMR and HAMR Hard Disc Drives (HDDs).

About the role - you will:

  • Integrate novel head and media technologies to improve the tribology of PMR and HAMR head disk interfaces
  • Characterize Transducer and Media technologies to integrate in state of art hard drives
  • Characterize the Head Disk Spacing and improve the test process to reduce head disk spacing sigma
  • Perform a variety of experiments in the lab using bench instruments, signal processing, and oscilloscopes
  • Do Volume data analysis using Python, JMP, Matlab, Minitab and MS Excel

Your experience includes:

  • Familiar with basic data analysis, running experiments, operating laboratory instruments, and preparing technical reports.
  • Programming and debugging experience.


You may also have:




  • MATLAB or Python experience is a plus
  • Competency in MS office applications.
  • Experience with statistical analysis
  • Experience with tribology, lubrication, contamination control, material characterization (AFM, SEM), and thin films is a plus



Education:




  • PhD or master's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent and must be enrolled in Fall 2026 classes.

Our Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate. The estimated base wage range for this position is $22-$43/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Seagate offers comprehensive benefits to its eligible Interns, including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, and participation in the employee stock purchase plan. Seagate also offers Interns12 paid holidays and a minimum of 48 hours of paid sick leave. The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company
