Position Summary

The Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time 9-month Lecturer III beginning August 10, 2026. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses at all levels, develop and lead laboratory and/or field components of the curriculum, and contribute to teaching and assessing core curriculum requirements in Earth and Planetary Sciences. Teaching courses including lectures, labs, and/or field courses, develop and evaluate course materials and learning assessments, provide student mentorship, contribute to departmental service (including departmental committees and university program assessments), assist in maintaining, improving and assessing undergraduate learning outcomes, labs, and field instruction are also expectations of the position.

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences currently has a full-time tenured/tenure track faculty of 11 and offers undergraduate degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences and Environmental Science, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences. We have ~120 undergraduate majors across the programs and serve up to 500 students/year across our introductory courses. Many students participate in undergraduate research and many existing courses take advantage of world-class analytical facilities, geophysical and remote sensing instrumentation, computational infrastructure and field sites that span New Mexico's diverse landscapes. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. by appointment date with specialization in Geoscience, Geoscience Education, or a related discipline
  • Experience teaching at the university level

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of effective teaching Earth and environmental sciences at the university level
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate innovative teaching methods, including lab/field work, use of computational tools (programming, GIS, remote sensing, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific practices, results, and interpretations
  • Demonstrated interest in mentoring undergraduate/graduate students in a teaching environment.
  • Demonstrated record of contributions to curriculum development or pedagogical scholarship.
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
