Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Study Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients and their families. The role involves delivering structured spiritual care interventions, documenting encounters and maintaining adherence to all training requirements. Key Responsibilities:
- Provide spiritual care and support to patients and family members in accordance with guidelines and a structured intervention framework.
- Conduct proactive visits, offer guidance during care and decision-making processes, and provide follow-up support as needed.
- Document all spiritual care interactions in alignment with institutional requirements.
- Participate in required training sessions and ongoing supervision to ensure adherence to protocols.
- Collaborate with other spiritual care providers or departments when necessary.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $63,700 - $136,100 (Annual Rate). Required Qualifications
- Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short term counseling to patients and families in a clinical environment.
- Skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.
- Thorough knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate spiritual care in a multi-faith clinical setting.
- Thorough knowledge of the ethical and confidentiality issues involved with clinical chaplaincy.
- Flexibility and adaptability to remain calm, and deal effectively with changing situations involving crises and stress. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with and accept people of diverse beliefs, cultures, ethnicities, ages, and health conditions.
- Ability to work independently with patients and families, while also participating in the healthcare team providing coordinated care.
- Thorough organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
- Thorough knowledge of spiritual assessment models, solid spiritual assessment skills, and the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, spiritual assessments of patients / families to the health care team.
- Demonstrated ability to establish connections with key persons quickly and function well in crisis / trauma situations, demonstrating compassion, flexibility, sensitivity, and command when needed.
- Advanced chaplaincy judgment and triage skills.
- Excellent communication and spiritual counseling skills.
- Previous experience (1-3 years) as a healthcare chaplain
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience
- Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or its equivalent in relevant training / experience.
- Completion of at least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education, accredited by ACPE.
Preferred Qualifications N/A
License/Certification
- Ordination or commissioning by one's faith group to serve as a religious leader and endorsement or official recognition by that faith group to function as a chaplain. Maintains good standing in faith group.
- Provisional or Board Certification, or eligibility for such certification, with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: the Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC). Maintains good standing through service in Board Certification organization. If incumbent is not already certified, the incumbent will work towards Board Certification within 18 months on the job. Palliative Care & Hospice Advanced Certification within 3 years of hire.
