Regional Lactation Coordinator

Eastern Area Health Education Center (Eastern AHEC) is a private, nonprofit educational organization affiliated with East Carolina University ( ECU). The mission of Eastern AHEC, in accordance with the Statewide AHEC Program, is to provide and support educational activities and services with a focus on primary care in rural communities and those with less access to resources to recruit, train, and retain the workforce needed to create a healthy North Carolina. Eastern AHEC functions in close collaboration with East Carolina University, and with the other NC University programs in Nursing, Allied Health, Public Health, Medicine and Pharmacy, as well as other institutions of higher education. Eastern AHEC serves 23 counties in the eastern part of the state and is one of nine centers located in North Carolina. Governance is by a Board of Directors with representation from regional health care institutions, the community at large, and the community college system. Mental Health Education provides services to the five Area L counties as well as the 23 counties in our region. The administrative structure of Eastern AHEC consists of an Executive Director, a Chief Administrative Officer, a Director of Fiscal Services, a Director of Information & Technology Services ( ITS), a Director of Communication, a Director of Educational Support Services, and six Division Directors which includes; Quality Support Center, Public Health / ORPCE / and Student Services, Mental Health Education, Nursing and Allied Health Education (the approved provider unit), Continuing Medical Education / Dental / Pharmacy CE Education, Pharmacy Education and Library Services.

ECU's Department of Eastern Area Health Education Center ( EAHEC, Brody School of Medicine) seeks a full-time (12-month, Stated Definite Term) Regional Lactation Coordinator. The purpose of this position is to provide initial core training for WIC Peer Counselors and Designated Breastfeeding Experts. In addition, the Regional Lactation Trainer ( RLT) will provide accurate, standardized, evidence-based lactation management, training, and continuing education for breastfeeding peer counselors, program managers, public health agency staff, and other medical professionals serving the WIC-eligible population in the respective region. This position will serve as an RLT and aid in strengthening and enhancing breastfeeding promotion and support efforts. The RLTs will collaborate with the local WIC agencies, WIC Regional Nutrition Consultants, and other relevant stakeholders, as well as coordinate the provision of accurate, effective, standardized, evidence-informed training and continuing education based on needs identified in the respective region.

The goal of this position is to meet the Healthy People 2030 goals for breastfeeding to increase the proportion of infants who are breastfed to 42.4% exclusively through 6 months and 54.1% at 12 months. Region 1 serves 30 counties across Western NC.

Contingent upon availability of funds

Master's degree or Post baccalaureate credential in public health or nutrition, OR a baccalaureate degree in a related field and 2 years' experience with current IBCLC certification.

International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant ( IBCLC) certification

An IBCLC with one or more health credential such as Registered Dietitian, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Speech Language Pathologist, and/or Medical Doctor.
