Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Hardware Engineering is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're seeking curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Architect

You will:

  • Design and develop the core network architecture for the vehicle and the Waymo Driver, collaborating with internal product teams and external OEM partners.

  • Own the comprehensive network communication matrix, defining the critical interface between the Waymo system and the base vehicle platform.

  • Lead cross-functional trade studies to resolve complex technical challenges, evolving the hardware design of the Waymo Driver and its integration into partner vehicles.

  • Write and negotiate system requirements for our OEM partners and internal software teams, ensuring the network architecture is robust and compliant for a Level 4 autonomous vehicle.

  • Work closely with software, hardware, and mechanical engineering teams throughout the implementation phase to ensure the successful development and deployment of the Waymo Driver.

  • Create verification and validation plans, analyze test results, and drive the resolution of network-related issues across all development and prototype phases

You have:

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical field.

  • 5+ years of experience in a technical role such as systems engineering or network architecture, with a focus on network design, communication protocols, or the integration of complex electrical systems.

  • Deep technical expertise in vehicle communication networks and protocols, including CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet, along with their associated description files (DBC, ARXML).

  • Proven experience developing and negotiating system and subsystem requirements for complex, safety-critical products with internal teams and external partners.

  • A strong understanding of functional safety principles (ISO 26262) and their practical application in system design.

  • Strong problem-solving skills navigating complex trades impacting EE, Networks, Software, and mechanical systems.

We prefer:

  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline.

  • Experience architecting and delivering end-to-end Over-the-Air (OTA) update systems for production automotive platforms.

  • Working knowledge of automotive cybersecurity principles and regulatory constraints (e.g., UNR 155/156), including experience with SecOC and other cybersecurity mechanisms.

  • Familiarity with fail-safe and fail-tolerant system design methodologies.

  • Code comprehension ability in C++ or Python to facilitate effective collaboration with software development teams.

  • Experience with automotive diagnostic protocols and tools (e.g., UDS, DoIP, CANalyzer).
