Job Summary
The Director of Clinical Engineering oversees evaluation, procurement, implementation, and lifecycle management of medical devices and equipment for purposes of diagnosis, monitoring, and therapeutic support throughout all care delivery environments of UC Davis Health. This position is responsible for delivering innovative, effective, and highly available technologies, along with appropriate infrastructure support and application architectural integration, to enable the highest levels of quality, service, and value in our care delivery. The leader will direct best-practice project and enterprise change management efforts to ensure continuity and regulatory compliance of mission-critical clinical systems. Will collaborate with executive leadership to align information technology and clinical initiatives with Clinical Engineering short- and long-range business needs, clinical demands, and regulatory compliance requirements.The Director is responsible for overseeing and directing the operations of the Clinical Engineering Department on an enterprise-wide basis, which includes support for the hospital, clinics, and affiliates. As such, the role will appropriately manage staff approximately 50 FTEs+, annual capital, department operating budgets, and will participate in strategic planning related to clinical technologies. The Director is accountable for the successful clinical technology management as defined in the UC Davis Medical Equipment Management Plan. Responsible for managing the organization that will support the end users in their use of the technology management programs. To this end, the Director is responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating the administrative and operational functions of the clinical technology service and medical device integration programs for all technology platforms. The Director articulates, plans, develops, implements, monitors, and maintains strategic clinical technology systems, with an emphasis on their impact on patient care. The Director collaborates with Clinical Engineering leadership at all UC Medical hospitals and clinics to foster an organizational culture that prioritizes quality and service. - Bachelor's degree in Engineering or relevant fields and/or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
- Must have 5 years' experience in the management of hospital operations
- Proven success in training, mentoring, leading, and motivating a team
- Must have experience using judgment to exercise delegated authority to work with others in a proactive way to troubleshoot operational and programmatic problems.
- Must have an understanding, facilitation, and coordination of regulatory compliance relative to the Joint Commission, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the California Department of Public Health. (CDPH) Clinical Engineering operations. Conduct audits and inspections to assess readiness and identify areas for improvement or corrective action.
- Knowledgeable of healthcare operational practices, methods, and principles. Knowledge of Joint Commission, Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and (FDA) Food & Drug administration, medical device-related accreditation and licensing requirements. Knowledge of (UL) Underwriters Laboratories, (NFPA)National Fire Protection, (NEC) National Electrical Code, (IEC) Independence Ethics Committee, and other national and international technical standards.
- Negotiation and persuasion skills to create collaborative relationships with representatives from different departments with diverse missions and needs.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey information, concepts, instructions, and ideas in oral and written formats to a variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds, agendas, and levels of knowledge and expertise.
- Advanced skills in office automation software (word processing, spreadsheets, visual presentations, etc.)
- Required to lead, manage, and communicate in an inclusive manner, and ensure appropriate transparency in all actions and duties.

- Master's degree preferred.
- Must have experience being an active key participant in the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) for disaster and emergency preparedness processes and drills

- Interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively and diplomatically with people from diverse ethnic, economics and cultural backgrounds.

- Must have experience creating regular communications with CE managers, supervisors, and staff regarding PO&M-CE business.
- Very organized tactical manager; capable of defining and implementing effective management structures and systems
- Management experience with progressive responsibility in fiscal management, human resource management, policy development, and strategic planning.
- Experience working independently, setting priorities, organizing work, and meeting deadlines. Experience managing time schedules, meeting deadlines, managing multiple requests and priorities, and maintaining productivity.

Department Overview The Clinical Engineering Department provides a wide scope of services including: medical equipment planning, pre-purchase product evaluation, integration with IT systems, installation, and repair and maintenance services to the UC Davis Health (UCDH), including its primary care network (PCN) clinics, and Shriners Hospital for Children, Northern California. In addition to repair and maintenance on most medical devices, we also provide services to the following specialty areas: medical imaging, radiation therapy, respiratory therapy, dialysis, anesthesiology, operating room, IT integration with medical devices, and ICU equipment.
