Iteris is seeking an Arterial Operations Specialist to help identify operational concerns that are affecting traffic flow and initiate the implementation of strategies to eliminate or mitigate those concerns. Traffic Operations Specialists are signal timing specialists who are experienced in the field of arterial traffic operations and are extremely familiar with the traffic operations along the program corridors. The position will assist with the analysis, assessment, and interpretation of data, conditions, and systems to plan and execute traffic signal retiming improvements. The position will also require regular coordination with public agencies and consultants. The Arterial Operations Specialist will be responsible for monitoring and responding to incidents impacting the arterial network, provide day-to-day monitoring of the traffic signal system, track system alarms, and generate signal system operations reports, monitoring of CCTV and DMS systems for the arterial street network, etc. This position is based in Tampa at the FDOT District 7 Traffic Management Center.



Note: If an applicant has an EIT certification, the position title will be Arterial Operations Engineer.



What you will be doing:




  • Ensure that critical State Road arterial corridors are being operated at a high level of efficiency and effectiveness by establishing baseline conditions for each corridor, identifying any deficiencies, monitoring the corridor on a regular basis to identify any degradation of the corridor requiring corrective action, and then initiating such corrective action
  • Provide signal timing plan development/refinement following maintaining agency protocol and practice and development/refinement of special event timing plans to be implemented as part of active arterial management
  • Focus on daily operations of multiple arterial roadways to which he/she is assigned
  • Use all available platforms (ATMS, travel time, ATSPM, CMS, etc.) to analyze and adjust signal operations to obtain maximum throughput and provide safe, reliable and efficient arterial operations
  • Some travel to conduct field work
  • Monitor arterial roadways and possess strong familiarity of the District's arterial network
  • Monitor the status of arterial network using CCTV, SIRV, Road Ranger Service Patrols (future), detector data, Bluetooth devices, etc.
  • Detect, confirm, update, and respond to scheduled and unscheduled traffic and incident management events on the arterial network, congestion, and travel time imbalances in the geographical coverage area
  • Coordinate with signal timing staff and county or city/municipality staff as required to adjust signal timing as needed in response to scheduled and unscheduled events
  • Perform daily Arterial ITS infrastructure checks (CCTVs, DMS, MVDS, Video Wall, etc.) early in the mornings and open ITS device failure tickets for malfunctions detected during the check
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff as needed
  • Follow FDOT District 7 policies and procedures, including the District 7 TSM&O SOP
  • Act as essential personnel during emergency events as needed to support MTC operations needs



What you need to be successful in this role:




  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field (consideration will also be given for equivalent experience)
  • Up to three (0-3) years' experience in traffic operations
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level I (or obtain within 6 months)
  • Ability to learn the operation of Synchro and Tru-Traffic software programs
  • Ability to learn Traffic Management Center (TMC) operations
  • Ability to work independently with a passion for traffic engineering and operations
  • Commitment to outstanding client service
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with clients and/or partner agencies
  • Proficiency in computing and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Able to work in a small team environment
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Strong work ethic
  • General knowledge and interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and traffic management standards
  • Flexibility and dependability
  • Good time and task management skills
  • Ability and willingness to work alternate schedules and function as essential personal (including during regional emergencies)



Iteris anticipates paying a base salary between $57,600 and $64,200 for this role. Actual pay offered may be below or above these amounts, depending on the individual's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
