Essential Job Responsibilities:

Summary/Objective:



This is an International Association of Machinists (IAM) Local 1414 represented classification. This job is subject to a collective bargaining agreement.



A Equipment Mechanic is a journey-level position, responsible for the daily inspection, repairs and rebuilds of lift equipment such as forklifts, container handlers and cranes. Diagnose and repair a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment and related equipment; operate and maintain a variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.



Essential Responsibilities:



  • Must have the ability to operate and complete daily inspections of forklifts, container handlers and cranes.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using repair manuals, schematics, OEM documents, service bulletins, and peer collaboration.
  • Ensures the operational condition of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements and repairs.
  • Responsible for major rebuilding, repair and/or removal and replacement of engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, turbochargers, pumps, motors, injectors, cylinder heads, compressors and hydraulic systems, air brake, air systems, steering, air conditioning, and electrical systems and associated vehicle parts.
  • Inspects and test tires to ensure conformance of standards.
  • Examines and prepares tires for installation; mounts and demounts tires on rims and vehicles; and fills tires to the proper air pressure.
  • Perform preventative maintenance per manufacturer's recommendations on equipment to ensure that it is safe and in compliance with all federal and state regulations.
  • Ensures that services provided follow all safety procedures.
  • Analyze and diagnose any potential malfunctions, defects, damage, or excessive wear.
  • Repair or replace any malfunctioning components, parts and other mechanical equipment and subassemblies.
  • Regularly test overhauled equipment to ensure that it is operating efficiently.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment using a variety of hoist, power, and hand tools.
  • Review Operator's Vehicle Condition Report before equipment is operated, to ensure there are no deficiencies that need to be addressed.
  • Ensures accuracy while maintaining all equipment maintenance files.
  • Responsible for inventory control, maintaining minimum parts and supply orders, verifying receipts, and containing cost for all equipment.
  • Responsible for written communication concerning ongoing status of repairs completed, repairs in progress and outstanding repairs necessary to provide vehicles and equipment safely and economically for daily operations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Required to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as safety toe boots, protective hard hat, ear protection and safety glasses, when applicable.
  • Adhere to company health and safety rules and procedures.
  • Maintain company values, rules, policies, and procedures are met to fulfill the company mission, as well as productive relationships with customers and vendors.
  • Responsible for special tasks requested by management and/or supervisor.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:



  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent, required.
  • Vocational education, apprenticeship, or on-the-job training preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Minimum 5 years' experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Experience with power and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of parts and supply inventory management.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to coordinate with a variety of individuals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions.
  • Must have a full set of own journey level hand tools and tool box to accomplish assigned work.
  • Must be able to maintain a current valid TWIC Card
  • Welding and fabrication, preferably.


Supervisory Responsibilities: No



Work environment:



  • Must be able to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, and nights.
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.
  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment.
  • Will be required to join the Union
