Job Description:
The Bus Monitor assists students while being transported to and from school, ensuring a consistent, safe, and supportive environment during transit. The monitor supports the bus driver by maintaining safety and discipline, assisting students with special needs, and ensuring compliance with safety procedures throughout the route. This position reports to the Transportation Support Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Language: Ability to speak and understand English; Bilingual is preferred.
- Experience: Experience in a school district or child care environment is preferred.
- Certifications: Not required.

- Student Supervision: Ability to manage student behavior positively and consistently, ensuring a safe, calm environment on the bus.
- Support for Students with Special Needs: Ability to assist students with diverse physical, medical, and behavioral needs, including lifting, repositioning, and using specialized equipment
- Medical Emergency Response: Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies, including administering medication or interventions as trained, following students' health plans.
- Use of Training to Support Special Needs: Applies required training to support students with special needs during transport, including implementation of individualized behavior plans and safety procedures.
- Communication: Effectively communicates with students, parents, families, drivers, school staff, and transportation staff regarding schedules, behavior, and student needs.
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge and execution of bus safety procedures, emergency evacuations, and securing of students and equipment.
- Adaptability: Ability to respond calmly to emergencies, special needs, and unexpected situations while maintaining student safety and order.
- Teamwork: Works collaboratively with drivers, transportation staff, and school personnel to support student transportation needs.
Core Responsibilities:
- Assist in the safe loading and unloading of students, including support with wheelchairs, car seats, restraints, and other equipment.
- Maintain student safety and discipline on the bus, enforce rules, and implement behavior plans as directed.
- Assist the bus driver with maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and orderly condition of the bus interior.
- Conduct and participate in emergency evacuation drills to ensure readiness and compliance with requirements.
- Provide basic personal assistance to students as needed (e.g., tying shoes, adjusting clothing, hygiene needs).
- Respond to medical emergencies and administer medication or interventions as trained and in accordance with student care plans.
- Communicate with parents, families, drivers, transportation staff, and school staff regarding behavior issues, schedules, and student needs.
- Complete and submit required written reports, including behavior reports, incident reports, and medication logs when applicable.
- Respond to emergencies and address immediate safety concerns during transport
- Attend required training, meetings, and in-service sessions to remain informed about safety procedures and operational updates.
- Support the overall transportation operation to ensure the effective and safe transit of all students, including those with special needs
Clearances:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Tuberculosis Skin Test.
Public Health Compliance
- Must follow safety and health protocols.
