The Gowdy Lab is seeking a motivated and reliable undergraduate student with federal work-study eligibility to assist with research projects focused on understanding the mechanisms of lung diseases. Our lab investigates how environmental exposures (such as air pollution and toxicants) and dietary factors influence immune responses and lung injury. The research assistant will support a wide range of studies using animal models, cell culture, and molecular biology techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with general laboratory tasks including preparation of reagents, buffers, and media.
  • Support animal studies (e.g., maintaining records, assisting in tissue collection under supervision).
  • Perform basic molecular biology techniques such as RNA/DNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis.
  • Assist in cell culture maintenance, staining, and imaging.
  • Participate in data entry, sample labeling, and inventory tracking.
  • Clean and sterilize laboratory glassware and maintain cleanliness of lab workspaces.
  • Attend weekly lab meetings and participate in training sessions.
  • Adhere to all safety and research compliance protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior laboratory coursework or lab experience (e.g., biology, chemistry, microbiology).
  • Basic understanding of scientific principles and lab safety.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
