General Summary
This position is an individual contributor role which implements and monitors EHS programs by working closely with the organization's operating divisions. Utilizing a consultative approach, ensures safety compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements for assigned operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for supporting the oversight and continuous improvement of all safety operations at the Birmingham, AL facilities, with a focus on regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and fostering a proactive safety culture.
- Responsible for the hazardous waste program. Oversees the safe handling and movement of hazardous and regulated waste materials. Compile and maintain hazardous waste documentation and disposal records.
- Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), overseeing the safe management of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment in accordance with applicable regulations and institutional protocols.
- Act as the on-site Chemical Safety Officer, assisting in the management of chemical safety and health-related matters across the facility.
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive environmental health and safety (EHS) programs and initiatives.
- Partner with facility staff, technical leadership, and project teams to align safety objectives with organizational and operational goals.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local EHS regulations. Monitor program adherence, address deficiencies, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Serve on the Emergency Response Team (ERT); assist with ERT training, program development, and emergency preparedness activities.
- Conduct safety audits and inspections to ensure adherence to EHS policies. Recommend corrective actions where necessary.
- Assist in executing EHS policies and procedures in alignment with Corporate EHS standards and directives.
- Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance and effective communication related to hazardous waste management, wastewater discharge, and air permitting.
- Develop, deliver, and track EHS training programs for employees, visitors, clients, and contractors, covering OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other relevant regulatory topics, including radiation, biological, and chemical safety.
- Establish and maintain relationships with local regulatory agencies and vendors (e.g., occupational health providers) to support the facility's safety objectives.
- Complete incident reports and lead accident investigations. Coordinate with EHS and HR on worker's compensation, accommodations, return-to-work programs, and related concerns.
- Act as the primary point of contact for safety concerns. Ensure timely visibility and follow-up on safety issues and potential hazards.
- Prepare and submit local, state, and federal permit applications and compliance documentation.
- Participate in the review of laboratory construction and renovation plans to ensure compliance with current safety standards.
- Assist in the creation, review, and annual updates of safety manuals, security plans, emergency response procedures, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Support operations in BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3. Must be able to work within the Select Agent program.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications: This should include new career path equivalencies if your group has updated them. Minimum requirements means that we would not be able to consider a candidate who does not meet all the listed items in this section.
- BS in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, or another related subject.
- 5+ years related experience in a biotechnology setting (a combination of relevant work experience or academic experience may be considered).
- Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of use of protective equipment and safety protocols related to handling hazardous materials.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
- Must be able to develop and work with simple databases to maintain required program documentation (SDS files, training, medical records, etc.).
- Must be able to build trust and confidence with all stakeholders to successfully establish the desired safety-oriented culture.
- Must be self-motivated and action-oriented to help establish safety programs that will address facility needs.
- Must complete training and obtain certification in the following within 6 months in position: 8-hour RCRA training, 40-Hour HAZWOPER, CPR/AED First Aid Certification, 49 CFR DOT Certification and IATA Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- MS degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, or related scientific field.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Management (CHMM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
- Knowledge in developing and managing safety programs and training.
- Knowledge of process engineering safety programs.
- Knowledge of Code of Federal Regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.), and local Fire Codes and environmental regulations to ensure facility compliance.
- Desired certifications: 8-hour RCRA training, 40-Hour HAZWOPER, CPR/AED First Aid Certification, 49 CFR DOT Certification and IATA certification
