Principal Designer Traffic / ITS

GFT is seeking a Principal Designer - Traffic / ITS to join our Transportation Team in Long Island, NY. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance in the New York, NY office.

What you'll be challenged to do:

As a Senior Traffic, ITS Designer, you'll be challenged to deliver intelligent transportation systems and traffic engineering design solutions from concept through construction. You'll develop drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and bid packages while addressing complex design issues related to ITS components and traffic operations. You'll assess the impact of construction and utilities on existing infrastructure and propose practical mitigation strategies. In this role, you may serve as a Project Manager, Task Manager, or Technical Advisor, ensuring projects stay on scope, schedule, and budget. You'll also prepare traffic signal, signing, and pavement marking designs, and help foster a collaborative team by mentoring junior staff.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

• Deliver ITS and traffic engineering design from concept through construction, developing drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and bid packages.
• Analyze and solve complex design challenges related to ITS elements, subsystems, and traffic operations.
• Evaluate construction and utility impacts on existing ITS infrastructure and propose mitigation measures.
• Lead or support projects as Project Manager, Task Manager, or Technical Advisor, maintaining scope, schedule, and budget.
• Prepare traffic signal, signing, and pavementmarking designs.
• Mentor junior staff and foster a collaborative team environment.

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• EIT required
• Minimum 15years of progressive ITS design experience, including roadway, intersection, and signal system projects.
• Demonstrated ability to apply standard traffic engineering practices to identify and evaluate design alternatives.
• Track record of delivering multiple, concurrent assignments for diverse clients while meeting quality, schedule, and cost objectives.

• Licensed Professional Engineer in NewYork; NewJersey PE is a plus.
• Working knowledge of NJDOT, NJTA, NYSDOT, standards

The salary range for this role is $126,000 - $150,000 per year. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
