Hiring Range
The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $72,200- $87,000.

About the Job
Involves counseling students on academic program policies and issues. Monitors student academic progress and assists students in making appropriate educational choices and decisions. Conducts informational sessions and provides advice. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides leadership and maintains strong ties with all levels of SJV PRIME+/DOME program leaders, faculty, staff, administration, and campus stakeholders across sites on student support services. Directly and through the work of staff, provides advice to students on a range of issues to guide them in making appropriate choices and decisions; oversees, reviews, and administers student records by analyzing data, counsels students, and provides recommendations that require interpretation and influence decisions. Serves as a subject matter expert on student support to staff and faculty who advise learners.
- Serves as SJV PRIME+/DOME Student Services expert at School of Medicine Readiness Committee (SRC) meetings. Creates and maintains system to monitor students' progress. Advises students, faculty, and SRC on requirements for program/degree completion. Proactively manages and communicates any program/degree requirement changes or challenges with student progression to program administration, students, faculty, and staff. Identifies students with progression challenges and recommends interventions including but not limited to academic remediation, curricular advising, and coordination with campus support services, as well as manages completion of recommended remedies with student support staff.
- Partners with faculty and DOME leaders to integrate student services and the curriculum to create a seamless experience for students. Coordinates with staff, faculty, curricular partners, campus services, and other support services as needed.
- Directs and guides staff on complex and sensitive issues encountered within their roles, including setting staff priorities, giving direction on managing student employees, and annually updating office processes and procedures. Oversees the projects, portfolio, and work of their staff, ensuring the team has the resources and support needed to do their work. Supports staff professional development through coaching and mentorship. Evaluates staff performance and defines development goals. Recruits, hires, onboards, and trains staff as needed.
- Prepares short- and long-range vision, planning, and improvements to student support processes for SJV PRIME+/DOME. Participates in the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for Student Services operations, and recommends to department management changes in policies and procedures. Creates training and programming materials, flow charts, and processes for the Student Affairs Unit. Initiates the development and monitoring of operational policies and procedures, as well as recommends changes in policies, procedures, and academic program requirements to program and DOME leadership.
- Plans for and monitors long-term IT needs for SJV PRIME+/DOME. Evaluates the unit's use of systems to look for improved efficiency and the ability to collect student data.
- Maintains a strong working knowledge of the field of student affairs and student services and ensures staff are knowledgeable in the latest policies and procedures regarding student affairs, financial aid, scholarships, registration, enrollment, grades, program requirements. Fosters culture emphasizing student self-sufficiency and use of online self-service options.
- Participates in creating, maintaining, and reporting operational and budget processes, academic and/or staff FTE, finance, human resources, and space planning. Provides a full range of student services advice to leadership, faculty, and students. Participates in developing and maintaining the Pre-health and DOME Student Affairs website content. Monitors program communications including student handbook, internal Box folder of procedures, integrated calendar, and other process creation/updates as needed.
- Uses data and analytics to identify, analyze, and resolve problems, which may be operational or educational. Assesses learner / program evaluation data trends, compiles and presents data to program leadership, and actively leads and participates in continuous quality improvement efforts for student affairs programs. Adjusts services as needed, including creating and implementing modifications for improved services based on the feedback collected, to provide a comprehensive experience for all students.
- Works collaboratively with campus and program counterparts to evaluate the effectiveness of the student services functions and makes changes to the program to provide better service to SJV PRIME+/DOME leadership, faculty, staff, and students.
- Monitors social and educational activities and student services to support learners and ensure program meets accreditation standards and reports to national accrediting bodies.
- Provides input and leadership for policy and program development by serving on UCM, UCSF, and/or SJV PRIME+ committees or by providing advice/data to support these efforts. Represents SJV PRIME+/DOME Student Affairs unit to the campus community and relevant external constituencies by sitting on various campus-wide academic policy and student success committees. Advises DOME Chair on complex curricular issues and makes recommendations when new courses and programs are introduced.
- Plans, implements, and serves as SJV PRIME+/DOME representative for student events, including but not limited to Bobcat Day, SJV PRIME+ Student Orientation, SJV PRIME+ Welcome Day, SJV PRIME+ Research Symposium, White Coat Ceremony, and program-specific activities. Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the program, and/or academic strategies and enrichment programs. May attend recruitment events.
Qualifications
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related area. (Required)
- Advanced degree from an accredited university. (Preferred)
- Two years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in student academic advising, or a combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree in student affairs, education, or related area is preferred but may not substitute for the required years of experience as outlined. (Preferred)
CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of the student affairs, medical education, higher education, or related field.
- Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Superb counseling and communication skills, as well as ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive and restricted matters.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes, or services to make improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate issues, develop original ideas, and identify solutions through critical thinking process.
- Ability to assess the effectiveness of programs and technologies, motivate and inspire staff to improve programs and services, and collaborate with departments across the UC Merced campus, program, and system wide to improve operations and services to students.
- Skills in project management including project implementation and continued evaluation.
