Minimum Experience/Education

  • Licensure as a Psychologist in the State of North Carolina
  • Terminal degree in counseling or clinical psychology
  • Completion of an APA-accredited doctoral internship

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • At least three years of Counseling Center experience or equivalent experience that is transferable, with evidence of increasing amounts of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
  • Experience with administering or assisting with administration of a training program including practicum training programs, psychology doctoral internship programs, and/or post-doctoral fellowships from a multidisciplinary lens. Knowledge of APA standards regarding accreditation of training programs.
  • Experience providing supervision to student staff.


Duties and Responsibilities
Provides leadership and oversight of the CAPS training program:

  • Develops orientation and training program for all trainees and prepares these students to function in their Counseling Center roles, including assignment of supervisors and midterm/final evaluation.
  • Initiates and coordinates long-term planning activities for the training programs based on input from training staff, trainees and Director. In conjunction with the Director, develops and updates goals and objectives for the Training Programs. As part of the APA accreditation process for the doctoral internship program, organizes and oversees preparation of the Interim Report and/or self-study and/ARO report, coordinates periodic site visits.
  • Maintains communication with trainees' academic departments (e.g., Clinical Health Psychology, School of Social Work, and Counselor Education) or home institutions.
  • Convenes and chairs the training committee.


Manages the CAPS practicum and doctoral training program. Expected duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage responsibilities related to selection and training of graduate assistants, advanced practicum students, and beginning practicum students from Clinical Health Psychology, Counseling, and Social Work.
  • Coordinate the advanced practicum seminar and practicum supervisors' meetings.
  • Coordinates the facilitation of training seminars for doctoral interns.
  • Co-facilitates supervision of supervision.
  • Develops/Refines evaluation documents and consults with senior staff to complete final evaluation of all trainees.
  • Provides supervision for a doctoral intern.
  • Organizes intern, practicum student, and applicant files and serves as the contact person for ACCTA, APPIC and APA.

Administrative

  • Along with other Associate Directors, provides administrative supervision, to include clinical supervision as needed, to senior clinical staff.
  • This task includes providing feedback and participation in employee annual appraisals. Reviews and approves staff requests for professional development and time off (e.g., sick leave, vacation leave).
  • Serves on weekly leadership team meetings.

Clinical

  • Responds to psychological emergencies or crisis situations requiring immediate intervention provide on-call services during and after regular office hours.
  • Consults with faculty, campus partners, and family members who seek assistance dealing with students having behavioral or emotional problems.
  • Engages in counselor on duty shifts and clinical access shifts.
