The Position
We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love. This position is in the Investigative Toxicology Group within the Department of Translational Safety in Genentech's Research and Early Development organization. The mission of the Investigative Toxicology group is to elucidate mechanisms underlying toxicities observed for our novel therapeutics using hypothesis-driven research to support drug discovery through clinical development. The Investigative Toxicology group provides fit-for-purpose wet lab-based investigation to address target safety assessment, lead optimization and issue mitigation by employing state-of-the-science in vitro and ex vivo approaches. As such, we continuously strive to establish new platforms and technologies to support a dynamic portfolio, novel modalities and emerging therapeutic area needs. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to fill a Scientist position. This laboratory-based role involves performing, qualifying and implementing biological assays and technologies to support the Investigative Toxicology group, requiring close collaboration with the team and key stakeholders across the organization. Prior experience in an investigative toxicology lab is required, with a focus on the development and optimization of novel in vitro approaches to investigate mechanisms of toxicity using human and animal cells. The ideal candidate should have experience generating high-quality data to facilitate the screening of candidate therapeutics as part of lead identification and optimization efforts. Key responsibilities include culturing and expanding primary cells and cell lines for in vitro screening, conducting assays to assess cytotoxicity and metabolic changes and capturing cell culture images using confocal and high content imaging platforms. Familiarity working with cells derived from various tissue types including but not limited to liver, lung, biliary and ocular systems is essential. Additionally, experience in emerging areas of interest to the Investigative Toxicology group (e.g., immune-driven toxicity, cholestasis / biliary toxicity) is highly desired. The candidate will play a critical role in developing novel in vitro platforms and methodologies to mitigate potential toxicities of concern for drug discovery programs. This includes designing experiments, making detailed observations, analyzing data and interpreting results. This is an ideal position for a researcher who is enthusiastic about learning and contributing to projects with a broad range of techniques. Strong communication and collaboration skills, a passion for lab-based research and a desire to learn about and integrate multiple aspects of toxicology are essential for success in this role.
