What to Expect
Tesla Insurance is seeking an experienced Claims & Coverage Counsel to join our innovative, fast-growing automobile insurance business. This position will report to the Managing Counsel and have primary responsibility for assisting the Claims Department with evaluating and resolving complex pre-litigation claims and advising on compliance and coverage issues. You will also help draft policies and forms and be a critical partner and legal resource for various compliance and risk mitigation initiatives as we continue to expand our footprint with our leading telematics-based product. Candidates must be execution-oriented, have excellent analytical skills, and be able to operate independently in a fast-paced environment.
What You'll Do
- Draft coverage opinions, reservations of rights, and denial letters for complex claims, and assist with compliance with subpoenas, preservation demands, and SIU matters
- Play a key role in negotiating resolution of claims pre-litigation, including complex, high-exposure claims and matters alleging insurance "bad faith"
- Collaborate with outside counsel to ensure consistent and effective handling of litigated matters
- Work across business and legal teams on claims compliance and risk management initiatives
- Strategize on processes and procedures for effective, consistent handling of claims in compliance with various state laws and assist with the development and delivery of compliance training programs
- Conduct legal research for internal business clients and provide clear, concise, accurate, and actionable legal advice
- Keep abreast of legal trends and regulatory developments to identify the potential impact to Tesla's business
What You'll Bring
- Admitted to practice law in California; admission in other states a plus
- 5+ years of experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house legal department with significant experience handling insurance litigation and coverage issues
- Excellent legal research & writing and communication skills
- Solid case evaluation abilities, critical thinking skills, and the ability to translate legal issues into clear and simple advice
- Able to learn on the job and be comfortable in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment where demands and priorities change rapidly
- Must be detail-oriented with outstanding organizational skills and the proven ability to multi-task while maintaining high-quality and performance
- Must be results-driven, have a strong sense of urgency, be business-minded, and able to effectively interact with, influence, and collaborate with other members of the organization
