What to Expect

Full-time, career position in the Service Technical Publications department. This department is responsible for documentation of most after-sales activities, such as automobile mechanical repair and collision repair, vehicle-scheduled maintenance, installation of charging equipment, and owner-facing information. Documentation specialties depend on background and experience.

Service technical writers create and maintain documentation for vehicle mechanical repair procedures (service manual), auto body repair procedures (body repair manual), vehicle service bulletins, tooling, and customer-facing forms. Documents are delivered online. Audiences include Tesla customers, Tesla service technicians, aftermarket repairers, regulatory agencies, and body shops.


What You'll Do
  • Gather information and field documentation requests from subject matter experts (such as engineers, quality assurance, software developers, product managers, and technicians)
  • Consider all aspects of a document request. Anticipate potential downstream issues that were not considered by others
  • Comprehend and extract system operation information from engineering documentation and tools (such as schematics, system specifications, and Enovia product lifecycle management tools)
  • Create and update existing content. Ensure content is accurate (for example, validate information accuracy, peer review others' content, and follow review processes)
  • Strategize and implement process improvements, for both documentation processes and peripherally-related processes
  • Source and use graphics appropriately (for example, request figures from technical illustrators, take photos, and edit photos and figures to highlight areas of interest to users)
  • Manage tasks and information flow using collaboration software (such as JIRA, Wrike, SharePoint, Quickbase, and custom databases)

What You'll Bring
  • Technical writing experience (software and/or hardware) with knowledge of relevant content development tools; Bachelor's Degree, certificate in Technical Writing, or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong attention to detail, strong personal organization, collaboration, and time management skills. Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced and challenging work environment with very tight deadlines
  • Proven professional attitude toward work assignments, team members, end users, and inevitable mid-project course corrections
  • Microsoft Word and Excel experience at an intermediate or higher level. Content Management System (CMS) experience (such as SDL LiveContent Architect)
  • Markup language experience (such as HTML, XML, DITA XML, or SGML) and structured authoring tool experience (such as oXygen, XMetaL, structured FrameMaker, or Arbortext Editor)
  • Style guideline experience (Simplified Technical English, S1000D, MIL-STD, MMSTP, or custom style guide creation or contributions)
  • Automotive repair or engineering (design or testing) experience and mechanical aptitude with hand tools (highly desirable)

    Expected Compensation
    $76,000 - $150,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
