Position Information

Position Title Senior Exhibition Writer
Department Exhibition - 060
Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Exhibition department is seeking a full-time Senior Exhibition Writer to serve as the lead writer on temporary and/or permanent halls at the Museum, creating original interpretive content for exhibitions. Reporting to the Director of Exhibition Interpretation, the Senior Exhibition Writer will work closely with others in the department and across the Museum, and in some instances will need to meet with and interview outside experts (e.g., Native advisors from the Northwest Coast) to obtain needed information and perspectives for use in shaping the thematic direction of the interpretation.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Research story ideas, including by speaking with curators and other experts at the Museum and elsewhere. Use this research to develop original ideas for exhibit displays and to develop themes and concepts for interpretive content, relying on their judgment of which ideas will be most interesting and engaging for visitors.
  • Write clear, engaging and original interpretive text that reflects their own imagination and writing talents.
  • Meet frequently with team members in the department, other departments and outside experts. Lead meetings related to interpretive content and guide the Exhibition team on ideas for exhibit displays. Share content goals of exhibitions with senior members of other Museum departments (i.e., Education, Communications, Global Business Development).
  • Edit and proofread final text (including, in some cases, text written by junior staff members). Manage the complex process of production for final, printer-ready labels, which requires multiple rounds of review with curators, advisors, graphic designers and photo researchers. Provide direction to others to ensure deadlines are met and the panels are well-written and error-free.

The expected salary range for the Senior Exhibition Writer is $78,000/annual - $82,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities.
