A Motor Vehicle Records screening will be conducted prior to employment.

This position requires a criminal background check. Therefore, you may be required to provide information about your criminal history in order to be considered for this position.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school and experience equivalent to substantial (six or more years of) full-time increasingly responsible adult security work including, at least, four years of supervisory experience.

Substitution of Education for Experience: One year of experience as an Inmate Relations Coordinator may be substituted for one year of the required supervisory experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants for this class must:
1. Be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons;
2. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of application;
3. Be a citizen of the United States;
4. Have a good moral character, as determined by investigation;
5. Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority;
6. Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority;
7. Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint based criminal history records check;
8. Have no conviction for a felony or any domestic assault convictions or have been discharged under any than honorable conditions from any branch of the United States Armed Forces;
9. Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position;
10. Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that relates to the essential functions of the position;
11. Submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for the use of illegal drugs.
12. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license;
13. Upon appointment, successfully complete all additional prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy and any and all on-line training.

Overview

The Correctional Major is responsible for the overall security plan and security operations of a facility. An employee in this class performs supervisory correctional work for a state correctional facility including staffing and post assignments, promoting compliance to all policies and procedures set by the institution and department, assisting in developing procedures.

Responsibilities

1. Assist in developing procedures for the proper operation of the facility in accordance with policy.
2. Supervise the enforcement of policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and standards for the facility including post inspections to confirm alertness by providing direct supervision of shift commanders.
3. May serve as Administrative Duty Officer requiring employee to be on-call and respond to critical incidents nights and weekends.
4. Plan, supervise, coordinate, and review security programs, policies and procedures, and other relevant facility programs including work release; make recommendations for changes where appropriate.
5. Direct, assign, train, supervise and evaluate the work of staff who provide security and security-related functions at the facility; interview and recommend applicants for employment; and review and/or make decisions on personnel actions as appropriate.
6. Provide adequate shift coverage and oversee post assignments.
7. Help develop and update the facility emergency operation plans.
8. Conduct meetings with Shift Commanders and other staff, attend scheduled staff meetings and enhance effective communication between administration, staff, and inmates. Assist in maintaining communication and consistency of operations between shifts.
9. Review reports that are generated by the shift supervisors. Properly process all reports and documents in a timely manner.
10. Conduct inspections of the facility and ground, to include housing units and general areas, to meet sanitation and safety standards.
11. Participate in internal investigations, inquiries of security problems, and grievances within the facility.
12. Organize and coordinates searches of occupied and unoccupied areas and quarterly vehicle searches, with approval from the Associate Warden of Security and Warden.
13. Take appropriate action to prevent or diffuse potentially disruptive situations.
