Activity Therapist- Behavioral Health

Horizon Health is seeking an activity therapist for our inpatient psychiatric unit at Prattville Baptist Hospital in Prattville, AL. The Activity Therapist is responsible for providing high quality patient care activities, displaying good skills in assessment of patients' functional needs and outcomes; consulting with and participating as part of the patients' treatment team; and observing and recording pertinent patient information. The Activity Therapisteffectively participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team, escorting and monitoring patient activities as well as attending to their personal needs. The Activity Therapist/MHT reviews patients' functional needs and will adjust care plans to assist patients in expressing their emotions and experiences in a safe and controlled manner, ensuring optimal patient outcomes. Depending on Program needs and the Activity Therapist's education and training, the Activity Therapist may function in a variety of therapeutic roles. The Activity Therapist must be capable of physically assisting patients and dealing with patient emergencies while working as a member of the clinical team.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts and adjusts therapies in accordance with patient diagnosis and needs
  • Implements a treatment plan of care for patients based on a thorough assessment of the patient's symptom presentation, professional/referral input and all other available data. Completes individualized and group therapies to ensure optimal outcomes
  • Conducts and documents psychosocial assessments in compliance with state, federal and accrediting entity regulations
  • Completes progress notes and assessments according to program procedures
  • Participates as an active member of the interdisciplinary team
  • Communicates effectively with other professional and support staff to achieve positive patient outcomes
  • Conducts group therapy sessions, displaying good theoretical knowledge of group therapy principles and group therapy techniques
  • Provides group and individual therapies on weekends as directed by supervisor
  • Provides resources and support for patients before, during, and after treatment of patients
  • Provides feedback to supervisor on an ongoing basis in regards to concerns, improvements, changes, etc.
  • Maintains professional interactions with peers, senior management, and staff through effective written and verbal communications
  • Checks Horizon and Hospital email daily and responds timely
  • Restore and promote patient's health by assisting in their individual therapeutic treatment plan
  • Escort and monitor patients during admissions, transfers, and discharges; and provides line-of-sight or one-to-one support to patients as ordered by the physician.
  • Monitor and document patient's food and fluid intake; feeding patients as required
  • Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support to patients, families, and friends
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality; and protects operations by keeping patient and program information confidential
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary team members
  • Help maintain unit cleanliness and neatness for patient comfort
  • Per RN direction, and using approved methods, assist in placing patients in seclusion or restraints; observe suicide/seclusion precautions
  • Maintain continuity among peers by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
  • Assist in emergency care if necessary
  • Protect patients and employees by adhering to safety standards, infection control policies and protocols, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations
  • Use hygienic practices and teach patient hygienic practices
  • Attend appropriate unit in-service training programs and staff meetings
  • Complete all required educational sessions and competencies per unit/hospital policy
  • Assist with tele psych equipment as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college with a psychology, social work, counseling, nursing or other related field is preferred
  • Minimum one year experience preferred with appropriate education
