Summary:

Provides support and assist the Human Resources Department with a wide range daily tasks and projects related to Human Resources compliance, recruiting, employee benefits, and administrative responsibilities. This internship is designed to provide exposure to a variety of Human Resources initiatives that will help the intern obtain gainful knowledge and experience.

Essential Intern Responsibilities: The Human Resources internship will be tailored to match the intern's skills and help in developing new skills in the Human Resources field. A sampling of job assignments and projects are listed below:

Total Rewards

Guide employees with benefit enrollment or changes

Provide paycheck print requests from employees

Assist with job description updates and system audit

Coordinate 403b fee notice mailing or other benefit mailings

Human Resources

  • Front Desk coverage
  • Organize Employee Files
    • Provide support and coordination of employee activities (i.e. awards banquet, monthly luncheons, etc.)
  • Research
    • Assist with various projects/tasks as needed, including electronic filing setup, Diversity team newsletter and activities,

Customer Service Responsibilities:

Demonstrates excellent customer service behaviors consistent with organizational and departmental standards. Consistently promotes teamwork and direct communication with co-workers. Deals discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement:

Contributes by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promotes patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.

Essential Intern Qualifications (Knowledge, Education, and Training Requirements):

  • Must be currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking an undergraduate degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Handle sensitive and highly personal information daily, maintain confidentiality and discretion in a mature and non-judgmental manner.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Proven ability to create graphs, forms and databases and summarize results.
  • Internet and web experience including social networking experience.
  • Competent language, spelling, and grammar skills with the ability to proof business documents.
  • The ability to demonstrate initiative and responsibility, perform multiple tasks, attend to detail, meet deadlines, adapt quickly to changes, and respond well to feedback.
  • Good interpersonal and telephone skills.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time)
    • Able to lift, carry, push, pull, up to 10 pounds occasionally
    • Able to sit for the majority of the time, but may involve brief periods of time involving walking or standing.
    • Able to use keyboard frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time)

Academic Requirements and Work Schedule

20-40 hours per week for a 12-16 week period. Actual hours and duration of internship will be determined at the time of position being awarded.

This is an unpaid internship. The internship focus is on providing education and on-the-job training, and not actual employment. This training is considered a benefit for the intern, not Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. The intern position is not a replacement for regular staff and the intern should not expect to be entitled to a job once training is complete. A monthly stipend may be offered and is intended to cover basic needs, such as lodging, meals and transportation.

  • This internship will promote learning for specific learning goals related to managing risk in health care administration as noted in intern essential functions above.
  • All Interns are supervised.
  • Interns are required to work a certain number of hours, but intern supervisor will work with each intern to be sure the hours do not conflict with academic participation in classes.
  • Each Intern will receive a formal evaluation midway and at end of internship time period in relation to each interns specific learning goals.
  • Mary Free Bed may work with each intern's academic institution to determine academic credit that can be earned, but that is not a requirement. Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital reserves the right determine that requirements for complying with academic requirements for internship credit are beyond what the supervisor or department can reasonably provide.

All interns are expected to follow all policies and procedures of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. Failure to follow Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital policies and procedures can lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination of the internship. If an intern is terminated the stipend may be reduced by proration to the date of termination.
