Overview

TRC Advanced Energy creates and implements sophisticated and innovative solutions for the next generation of America's energy markets with technology and market research, engineering and technical consulting, policy and building code development, and program management across the United States. TRCs Research and Consulting (R&C) team (within the Advanced Energy practice) is focused on 'tech to market' building technologies and strategies to reduce energy use and carbon impact from buildings and provide grid flexibility. Our clients include utilities, state and federal agencies, non-profits, and other energy efficiency organizations.

The R&C team is seeking a qualified individual to support emerging technology development, demonstration and deployment, codes and standards research and development and market research and evaluation. Candidates must possess technical capabilities and knowledge of building science, building systems, or green building. No project is the same, and you'll get exposure to lots of different types of work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Your role will include conducing both qualitative and quantitative research applied to a wide range of topic areas. Projects and responsibilities may include energy analysis and technology and market research of HVAC, DHW, grid-flexibility, decarbonization, distributed energy resources, human factors, and control systems.


Responsibilities

Primary Work Area Responsibilities:

  • Codes and Standards Development
  • Market Research and Evaluation

Provide technical analysis and project management services for research projects involving emerging technologies and solutions such as building decarbonization/electrification, Zero Net Energy new construction, and deep energy retrofits for existing buildings. This position requires an individual who enjoys and can handle multiple projects covering multiple technical areas and multiple tasks.

  • Perform energy analysis, design assistance, and design reviews.
  • Develop and review calculations used to estimate savings, carbon emissions reductions, and other benefits of emerging technologies and green building solutions.
  • Manage field demonstrations of emerging technologies, including construction administration, field monitoring, data collection, and technology commissioning.
  • Staying informed about energy issues and industry trends through regular technical reading and participation in local and national professional organizations.
  • Assist with market research to develop 'tech to market' pathways for emerging technologies.
  • Conduct technical analysis in support of developing policy solutions such as building energy codes, local ordinances with associated stakeholder outreach and engagement.
  • Assist in the development of technical standards, protocols and requirements for innovative energy efficiency and green building programs.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines and client expectations.
  • Conduct meetings and presentations.
  • Translate results into actionable recommendations.
  • Communicate research results via written reports and graphically.

Business Development Responsibility (15%)

  • Support, and eventually lead proposals for future RTC projects.
  • Support client outreach to gauge satisfaction with RTC services
  • Support new client engagement

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include Bachelors or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Architecture, or related discipline; and three (3) to seven (7) years professional experience in one or more relevant topics:

  • Building technology development, demonstration, or deployment
  • Technical market research of energy efficiency or low-carbon building strategies
  • HVAC engineering or research
  • Domestic hot water system engineering or research
  • Building envelope engineering or research
  • High performance building design and energy analysis
  • Control systems design, commissioning, or operation
  • Energy modeling including whole building energy analysis
  • High performance building construction administration or operation
  • Distributed energy resources engineering or research
  • Electric vehicle charging infrastructure
  • Load flexibility

Preferred skills and qualifications include:

  • Building energy simulations, such as CBECC or EnergyPlus; setting up parametric energy analysis frameworks in energy modeling software to perform batch processing of bulk energy models
  • Statistical analytics skills and experience with Excel, VBA, R or Python.
  • Life cycle cost assessment and cost effectiveness analysis
  • Survey instrument and interview guide design.
  • Familiar with energy codes, (CA Title 24, WSEC, IECC and/or ASHRAE 90.1)

The ideal candidate will be assertive, personable, and a self-starter, with the capacity to manage multiple tasks across multiple teams. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with internal technical team members and external customers.

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company's annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
