Job Description

The Business Manager III plays a critical leadership role in managing the financial and business functions of the Department of Student Health and Well-Being (SHWB), which includes the Student Health Center, Counseling Center, Wellness Resource Center, and Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Center. In addition, this position provides financial and business process support to Student Affairs Administration, including shared services teams. The role emphasizes timely, accurate financial reporting, cross-departmental coordination, and systems thinking to help departments operate efficiently and in alignment with divisional goals.

This position reports to the Director of Finance for Student Affairs and works closely with the Executive Director of Health and Well-Being.

Essential Functions:

Strategic Financial Management

  • Serve as a key financial advisor to the Executive Director of Health and Well-Being and directors of SHWB departments, contributing to strategic and operational planning efforts.
  • Support business operations for Student Affairs Administration and its shared services units, in partnership with the Director of Finance.
  • Lead the integration of financial operations from previously distinct departments into a unified budget (~$12M).
  • Forecast and model revenue/expenses for new business initiatives, including student fees, healthcare billings, and special projects.
  • Collaborate with University Physicians' financial team to understand clinical billing operations and improve efficiencies in outpatient service revenue.
  • Coordinate closely with Student Affairs' data analyst and other staff to analyze complex datasets (e.g., revenue, expenditures, clinic operations) and turn insights into actionable recommendations.

Financial Operations & Reporting

  • Prepare, reconcile, and manage multiple funding sources including student fee revenue, professional fees, general revenue allocations, and gift funds.
  • Create and maintain divisional financial reporting tools, with monthly updates using advanced Microsoft Excel functions (e.g., pivot tables, lookups, dashboard integration).
  • Generate and present financial reports, including budget-to-actual comparisons and salary tracking.
  • Support year-end close processes and assist departments with budget development and ongoing monitoring.
  • Serve as a key resource for navigating UM and campus financial, HR, and procurement policies.
  • Ensure compliance with University policies related to accounting, procurement, and contract processing.

Systems, Tools, and Special Expertise

  • Utilize and support systems including Workday (budgeting and financials), Cognos, and other UM web-based tools.
  • Serve as the division's primary resource for Marketplace (eCommerce platform): create and edit storefronts, consult on store setup, and ensure compliance with university guidelines.
  • Provide guidance and troubleshooting support for department users in business systems and processes.

Training, Collaboration, and Compliance

  • Train professional and student staff on appropriate use of funds, budget management, and purchasing procedures.
  • Liaise with departments including Finance, Human Resources, Procurement, Risk and Insurance Management, University Physicians, and other internal/external partners.
  • Participate in divisional and departmental leadership meetings and represent SHWB/Student Affairs Administration in cross-campus business-related initiatives.
Shift

Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

This position may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in financial management or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of financial planning, forecasting, and budget reconciliation.
  • Demonstrated experience managing finances in a complex environment with multiple funding sources.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting, and data analysis tools.
  • Experience with Workday financials and budgeting systems, Cognos, and UM system reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with outpatient healthcare clinical operations, especially in a university or public health context.
  • Knowledge of eCommerce platforms such as Marketplace, including storefront creation and maintenance.
  • Excellent analytical and project management skills; ability to interpret data and recommend strategic actions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Range: $70,000 - $100,000 per year, paid monthly
