Overview

Astrion is seeking an Engineering Technician III. This position is in support of the METTS III contract at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) on the Redstone Arsenal located in Huntsville Alabama. This position is in direct support of the Valves Lab group supporting propulsion test activities as well as other pressure systems activity across MSFC.

This position is for first shift working 4-10 schedule 6:00am - 4:30pm Mondays through Thursdays.

This position provides semi-professional technical support for engineers working in such areas as research, design, development, testing, or manufacturing process improvement. Work pertains to electrical, electronic, or mechanical components or equipment. These technicians are required to have some practical knowledge of science, engineering, mathematics, or computer science.

  • Serve a multi-craft role and are expected to function as or learn to function as Machine operators, fabricators, Mechanics, and Truck Drivers.
  • Perform routine assignments under close supervision from provided detail procedures.
  • Provide assistance to plan and organize work operations necessary to setup, operate and maintain mechanical equipment used in pressure systems and other associated major components related to pressure systems operations. Systems include compressors, pumps, valves, hydraulic machinery, and other equipment required to provide propellant/pressurant services to customers across MSFC.
  • Provide assistance to higher level engineering technicians to fabricate, assemble, modify, and test specialized mechanical systems and sub-systems used in supporting propulsion test and Propellants/Pressurants Distribution Systems operations.
  • Provide support in conducting various operations that may require minor modifications in the setup of systems that utilize potentially hazardous medium such as: cryogenics, high pressure gases, various propellants and oxidizers, and high-pressure hydraulics.
  • The Engineering Technician should be familiar with mechanical equipment such as tube flaring, valves, regulators, gauges, hydraulic pumps, air compressors and other mechanical machinery associated with pressure systems.
  • Responsible for disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, repair, and hydrostatic/pneumatic testing of various valves, including but not limited to pressure reducing regulators, manual and actuated hand valves, gate valves, globe valves, ball valves, check valves, solenoids, and safety/pressure relief valves.
  • Read and interpret schematics pertaining to the assembly, repair, and reassembly of valves in high pressure, hydraulic, or cryogenic environments.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Follow documentation and formal instructions given in accordance with all MSFC Quality Control procedures and ASME, API, and National Board codes and standards, as well as manufacturers specifications.
  • Thoroughly complete all documentation associated with testing and repairs on a Work Management Computer system. (Windows OS)
  • Communicate timely updates to management and co-workers to ensure timely and successful completion of job responsibilities.
  • Manage a large number of active tasks with varied schedules.
  • Shall obtain "Valve Repair" certification through OJT and internal or third-party training.
  • Candidate must be capable of working with an assigned team at various MSFC Facilities.
  • Must have the ability to follow specific work instructions and mechanical schematics.
  • Must have the ability to understand the fundamentals of mechanical systems, specifically LOX cleanliness protocols, cryogenic and pressurization system requirements.
  • This position works Four-10's including alternate Saturdays. All members of the team are expected to be able to fill in on alternate shifts (weekends, nights, overtime, and base closures) when required.

Required Experience/Education: (i.e.: Knowledge, skills, abilities, software, etc.)

  • Requirements of an Engineering Technician III position include a high school diploma with at least five (5) years of directly related experience to maintaining and operating industrial pressure systems.
  • Knowledge in pressure system operations at a NASA Facility is strongly desired.

Work Environment: Indoor and Outdoor industrial settings

Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 40 lbs on occasion, sit or stand for long periods of time, ability to use and climb ladders and maneuver through tight spaces.
