Job Summary

Ensures assigned school is safe and secure for students, staff and visitors. Patrols designated areas during assigned hours with a view to maintaining safety and security.

Starting Rate of Pay: $19.16 per hour

Qualifications

  • Position requires a high school diploma or a GED.
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • CPR and/or AED training is preferred
  • Additional course work in safety/security is desired.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to intervene during physical altercations or disturbances and restrain individuals as needed and based on training.
  • Must be able to move throughout a building utilizing stairs.

THE SELECTION PROCESS: will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Office of Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as alert and prepared to report to the Safety Supervisor, Principal or designee any evidence of extraordinary activity (criminal or otherwise) in the building, on the grounds, or near the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) site.
  • Conducts investigations within the limits of authority, where assigned by the principal or designee, and cooperates with law enforcement personnel when needed.
  • Provides such information which may pertain to the maintenance of a school environment conducive to learning, obtained through students, staff and the community.
  • Develops a thorough knowledge of appropriate emergency procedures.
  • Assists in crowd control and the maintenance of order where safety of staff, students, visitors and protection of property is involved. This includes the ability to intervene and physically break up physical altercations at any assignment involving students, staff, or visitors.
  • Supervises and escorts individual students for limited periods of time when the situation requires such control.
  • Renders first aid within the limits of skills as expected of all other personnel.
  • Provides on the spot guidance and direction to students within training and ability.
  • Maintains a daily log and documents activities including but not limited to instructions received, physical and verbal contacts with individuals while performing duties and anything else deemed relevant.
  • Assists schools in the prevention and control of disruptive acts, violence, etc., as directed by the safety supervisor and or principal.
  • Assists in reducing truancy and loitering in and about the school.
  • Assists in controlling and identifying hall walkers and loiterers.
  • Assumes responsibility in the incident profiling system and the local school level and ensures that all reports are filed in a timely manner.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
