Job Description Summary:
The Biostatistics Center ( BSC) of the Milken Institute School of Public Health of The George Washington University, is a premier research facility in Rockville, Maryland. As a leader in statistical coordination, BSC serves as the central hub for large-scale, multi-center clinical trials and epidemiological studies, primarily funded by federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health ( NIH). This senior-level position independently manages and maintains critical infrastructure systems while leading efforts to expand and optimize services and production infrastructure. The role is key in development initiatives and strategic planning, ensuring systems remain efficient, secure, and scalable.
Key responsibilities include system modifications, administration, application management, resource allocation, load balancing, testing, and issue resolution. Additionally, this position may oversee other system administrators across the enterprise. A core aspect of this role is researching emerging technologies and assessing their integration into the organization's infrastructure.
As a top-tier contributor in systems engineering, this position has an enterprise-wide impact, driving innovation, efficiency, and operational excellence.
Essential Duties:
Systems Administration
* Design and implement Windows/Linux infrastructure solutions using enterprise best practices
* Manage hybrid cloud environments and coordinate with cloud service providers
* Perform system hardening, security monitoring, and compliance maintenance
* Implement and maintain backup and disaster recovery solutions
* Oversee patch management and system updates across all platforms
Virtualization Management
* Administer VMware vSphere/ESXi/Proxmox environments and virtual desktop infrastructure
* Design and manage thin client computing environments, including ChromeOS deployment
* Configure and optimize thin client performance and security
* Manage container orchestration and microservices architecture
* Implement and optimize virtual storage solutions and resource allocation
* Design and maintain virtual network configurations
* Deploy and manage cloud-based virtualization solutions
Communications Systems
* Manage VoIP infrastructure
* Configure and maintain unified communications platforms
* Monitor call quality and optimize voice network performance
Infrastructure Development
* Develop automation scripts for system administration tasks
* Implement configuration management and infrastructure as code
* Design and maintain monitoring and alerting systems
* Create and maintain technical documentation and procedures
* Research and implement emerging technologies

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
* Advanced knowledge of Windows Server and Linux administration
* Expertise in virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM, Hyper-V)
* Experience with PBX systems and VoIP technologies
* Experience with UNIX and ChromeOS deployment/management in thin client environments
* Knowledge of web-based applications (OwnCloud, Tableau, Zimbra)
* Experience with RPM and YUM repository management
* Proficiency in LAMP stack administration
* Expertise in system monitoring tools (top, Zabbix, etc)
* Experience with email services
* Proficiency in scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash)
* Strong understanding of networking protocols and security
* Experience with cloud platforms ( AWS, GCP, Azure)
* Knowledge of storage systems ( SAN/ NAS, RAID, LVM)
* Familiarity with configuration management tools
* Experience with monitoring and logging systems
* Experience in healthcare or research environments
* Knowledge of HIPAA compliance and security frameworks
* Project management experience
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
* Excellent communication and documentation skills
Hiring Range $92,790.58 - $180,835.92
