The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) plays a critical leadership role in supporting the Chief Nursing Officer in the overall administration, direction, and coordination of nursing services. The ACNO collaborates with nursing leaders, medical staff, and executive leadership to ensure delivery of high-quality, safe, and cost-effective patient care. This position provides operational oversight of nursing departments and fosters an environment of clinical excellence, innovation, and professional development.

  • Assist the CNO in the development and implementation of strategic nursing initiatives and policies.
  • Oversee the daily operations of assigned nursing units and clinical departments, ensuring regulatory compliance and adherence to best practices.
  • Participate in performance improvement efforts, patient safety initiatives, and accreditation readiness.
  • Support the strategic development and implementation of nursing-led research and scholarly activities.
  • Contribute to succession planning, mentoring, and professional development for nurses and nurse leaders
  • Understands Magnet requirements.
  • Provide leadership in recruitment, retention, and development of nursing personnel.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to promote effective care coordination and patient satisfaction.
  • Monitor clinical outcomes and patient care metrics; develop action plans as necessary to address deficiencies.
  • Support the implementation of evidence-based practices and foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Represent nursing leadership in various committees, workgroups, and meetings in the absence of the CNO.
  • Act as a mentor and coach to nurse managers and emerging leaders within the nursing team.
  • Work with academic partners to ensure clinical placements and residency programs align with workforce and educational objectives.
  • Consistently deliver the best in customer service and patient care. As a team member, demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors, and other employees.
  • Champion Carilion's mission, vision, and values; comply with the policies and procedures, ethical standards and code of conduct set forth by the company.
What We Require:

Education: Master's degree in Nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration (MHA), or related field required.

Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressive nursing leadership experience, including at least 3 years in a senior management or administrative capacity. CNO experience in a small hospital (300-500 beds) or ACNO experience 500+bed hospital. Magnet experience preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Certification in Nursing Administration (e.g., NE-BC, NEA-BC) preferred.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and organizational skills. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and team-building abilities. In-depth knowledge of nursing practices, healthcare regulations, and quality improvement methodologies. Proficient in using healthcare technology, EMR systems, and data analytics to inform decision-making.
